...a quick search of this forum for remington 597 22lr info seemed to turn up a few people requesting info on it, a few people who have owned 597's of various vintage and were unhappy with it, and about the same number who have or currently own and are happy with the rifle. What I did tend to read ALOT of was
"I've heards'..." and or "shot a buddys 597 last month..." type of replies listing numerous FTF, feed and extraction issues. I went to my local gunshop in mid august of last year with intentions of purchasing a Ruger 10/22, but after handling both the Ruger and a 597 that caught my eye, I went home with the 597. The 597 felt more like a full sized rifle and just had better ergonomics IMHO.
I had no previous experience or knowledge of the 597 beforehand. Bought a bulk box of winchester x-pert 22lr rounds and set out to sight-in my new toy!!!. I proceeded to load my 10 round mag and found I was hard pressed to load even 8 rounds  , mag floor seemed maxed. Shot my first three rounds then got a jam. Manually cleared the jam got a few more clean shots and jammed again. This pattern continued till I finally gave up and went home:confused: . Searched the magical "intraweb" that nite and found rimfire central.com,where I followed two tips that took a total of about 25 mins. I loosened the torque on my guide-rail bolts and polished the internal area of my magazine. Went out shooting again with some CCI's, federals and some thunderbolts along with the X-Perts and what a difference!!! :D a full day of bench shooting without a single hitch, and a real idea of what this little rifle was capable of!.
Roughly 1500 rounds and a volquartsen target hammer later still no problems whatsoever!. Off the bench it will shoot quarter-sized groups at 50 yards with thunderbolts stock, with the target hammer I shrank my groups down to roughly nickel sized at that distance. I bought my 597 with the scope package and i wished I hadn't,the stock scope is a low quality P.O.S. that would not hold zero. I replaced it with a simmons .22 mag and it has been great. I can even manage to squeeze a whopping 9 rounds in my mag these days.To make a painfully long story short, with a few non-time consuming and stone simple mods the 597 has turned into an extremely reliable and damn accurate little shooter for the money. Please keep in mind I don't work for Remington :p, and I'm very unbiased when it comes to brands, as my cosmopolitan assortment of firearm makes and models would prove. I ask you to be honest with yourself and think of how many firearms you have owned [excluding bolt actions] that don't have a single little quirk or gremlin you have either tuned-out of it or just lived with. For those who claim the 597 has no aftermarket following please pay a short visit to rimfirecentral.com. I apologize for the horrendously long winded post, and hope that those considering a 597 will find this info useful and won't be afraid to give it a second look.

Cheers, Mad Mikey.

'Bought a 597 last year for my 8 year old...
She's gone through at least 500 rnds of cheap Federal 'target ammo' without one jam or mis-feed.
She can load ten rounds into her mags without any help.

that is all.

I bought a 597 for my 12-year old son and ended up spending extra dough to it. I installed a VQ match hammer, extractor and installed a Bushnell banner 4-12x40mm. It is so much fun shooting this baby and YES, it shoots flawlessly. This rifle shoots a group of 1/2 inch from 50yds, but then I am impatient and tend to rush my shots. I always drill a nickle-sized hole in the target when I dont rush my shots.
Bought this rifle $165.00 (tax included) from leBaron 2-years ago. For its price and the joy it is giving me, I give this baby a thumbs up.

I've had a 597 Magnum since 1999. It was a real pos with the plastic mags but after switching to the new metal mags and swapping the extractor for a VQ it now runs great. I like the 597 better than an un-modified 10/22.

My 597 still has feeding issues after upgrading to the metal mags. Do you have a link to the post on how to loosen the torque on the guide rails, or could you walk me through what you did? And if anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate it. I like the gun, and realize it just needs some tweaking.

The rails have to be torqued in just finger tight. Too much torque and you will have problems. I use my right index finger to tighten the allan wrench, when I encounter moderate resistance I stop tightening.

DAR is right on...just finger tighten guide-rail setscrews and you're reliability and cycling smoothness should improve by leaps and bounds. The manual for the rifle calls for 10-12 inch pounds torque which seems awful tight to me. Not to worry about the action falling apart as the the set screws cannot fall out once the action is bedded in the stock as the rear of it physically blocks both screws. I also would strongly recommend the simple mag re-work posted on link below, as it seems to really help even on new metal mags.
NOGNOG I'm glad to hear you enjoy you're 597 as much as I do we seem to be enjoying similar performance. That target hammer really was a great addition wasn't it!!!. Curious as to what 22lr round you have found most accurate??.

Mad Mikey.

Busta here is the link that will make you fall in love with yer 597 all over again!! :D

Thanks Mikey and DAR, I backed them off a bit, had a some trouble with the right hand side screw so this may have been the problem. Will have to add this to my next range outing and see what the difference is! Will let you know how it goes, but if this works, I owe you big time! I have been trying for years to figure out what was causing this.

What are your thoughts on the Volquartsen hammer/extractor combo? Seems like a pretty cheap add on (hawktecharms seems a good source) does this also improve performance?

Steve

BUSTA,
I was not aware that the hammer and extractor were sold as a combo deal :( and only bought the hammer directly from Volquartsen. It is a very small piece and was cheap to ship however. My dealing with Volquartsen was top notch and they seemed very professional. The Hammer itself is a fairly easy install and a noticeable improvement. I would guess by feel [not an actual measurement] that stock trigger pull was around 4.5-6 and the Volquartsen hammer would be roughly 2.5-3.5. What I can teel you for sure is that the trigger breaks much cleaner and smoother, and that my best groups shrank from around quarter-size at fifty yards to around nickel-sized with new hammer. For the price paid for the hammer it was worth it.
Extractor is on future list possibly, but the rifle cycles flawlessly now so we'll see. BUSTA make sure you de-burr and polish inside of you're mags as well, as per instructions on link at bottom of my last post. Let us know as soon as you take her out again as to how she performed.

Good luck :D,
Mad Mikey.

The VQ extractor was a necessary replacement to mine because of unreliable extraction with winchester ammo. I have had no malfunctions since installing it. The VQ hammer brought my trigger from 8lbs to 2.5lbs definately a worthwile investment for accurate shooting.

Thanks for the honest remarks and hints, guys.
I had a 597 in my hands this morning, and decided I'll be buying one for myself by the end of Feb.
So much negative about this gun on the web, but from what I read, most issues were with the first 2 generations of magazine.
The rail screws will be the first thing I check when I get mine.
The girl at the gun store stated that, with the exception of aftermarket "gadgets", the Remington was every bit as good as the 10/22, for quite a few $$$ less. Now I can't wait to get one! :runaway:
Thanks again! :D

Bought one last night and took it out today, with the intention of teaching my wife to shoot on it. A few extraction issues, but only on the last few rounds from a specific box of AE .22LR. Switched boxes and the problem went away.

Wife had a blast, and I'm generally happy with it. Ask me again around 1500 rounds.

I will pick-up my 597 in 22mag this week and I wonder if the 22mag as the same extraction and magazine issues ... and ... if yes, are the same corrective action applicable ??

JP I am unsure if the issues will pertain to your model, just take it out and give it a shot...or a couple hundred shots for that matter!!. Let us know how the day went, and have faith because it seems there are more than a few 597 owners reporting ZERO problems with thier rifles out of the box. You may find out alot more about your rifle from the link below... now go empty some mags and report back to us !!! :dancingbanana:

Good luck and enjoy!

Wow !!! Thanks a lot 77... plenty of reading to do, it will kill time while waiting to get my new toy. This is all great stuff to know about before I get my riffle ... this way I will know what is wrong if something does go wrong

Thanks again and I will provide feedback once I try it at the range

JP

Thankss for the update. I was looing at either a 10/22 or 597. I like the 10/22 RR one and I read all the 10/22 posts and thought I would be stuiped not to get one. You may have changed my mind and saved me some $$$. The only thing I found with the 1 597 I held was the finish on the 597 was not real good but I may have to go back for a second look after reading your post. Thanks again

...Well Tinman I don't think you could go wrong with either rifle, 10/22 or 597.
I have a Ruger model 77 MKII in .300WSM and it is a well-built good quality rifle.
My 597 is the stainless with laminated stock version. One fine day when the funds permit I would like to buy a 10/22 and then have both. Next .22 will probably be bolt-action though. So many firearms to buy...so little cash flow  Picture of my 597 in one of the previous threads. Buy whichever feels right for you and then "run what ya brung" :dancingbanana:

I have the Magnum version all the same problems as the LR, and all the same simple fixes. Mine is an earlier model bought in 99.
