An "honest and objective" 597 post

Mine eats everything EXCEPT Dynapoints... it hates them. They FTE every time. Mine loves the Remington Subsonics...

Funny, mine eats Dynapoints just fine, my only mod so far is a VQ extractor.

Just got a bunch of .22LR ammo today to try out in my 597;

Win. Xpert 36gr
CCI blazer 40gr
Thunderbolt 40gr
Fed. 40gr game shock
Fed. 38gr game shock
Fed. American eagle 38gr
Win. Dynapoints 36gr

will see what the gun likes the best :D

what ammo do you guys use in your .22 597?

sorry if I missed it somewhere, but where can you order the volquartsen hammer?

and does anyone know if there is a replacement or a cure for the wobbly handle that ya grab ahold of to #### the rifle?

looks and feels bad the way it is

For the aftermarket hammer try rimfirecentral.com they have a big sponsor link section and I've heard most of theose places will ship to Canada. As for the charging handle on your bolt, if you pull it straight sideways it will come out and there's a little springy tab thingy that sits underneath the handle. If you bend it upwards VERY CAREFULLY it will help out a lilttle bit, I did this but I still have a bit of side to side play, but it's better then it was. Be carful not to break that tab off by bending too hard. Good Luck!

The deed is done! Picked up my 597 this afternoon.
Unfortuneately, not sure when I'll have time to make it to the range.
I will update this post with my first impressions.
Thanks again for all the input.

I owned a .22lr 597. Great rifle... more accurate, nicer appearance. Fails sooner though with extended use (tighter tolerances can't handle the grime). More difficult to strip as well (I am thinking recoil springs). Also no extended mags (at least none at the time I had one).

Otherwise great guns. I'd get one again :)

G37 I second that gripe about the 597, it is not the easiest to field strip with the twin guide spring rod alignment especially on re-assembly!!!. A great little rifle for me though overall. Never fails to give me one of these at the end of the day!!! :D

IM_Lugger, where did you get the Winchester Dynapoints? I've been looking for those for about 2 or more years now:mad: I've always found them to be deadly accurate for the price, and reliable too. Neither WalMart or Canadian Tire sells them anymore:confused:

Must be a regional thing, as Crappy Tire and Wally World sell them here... albeit it is hit and miss.

Thanks again for all the input.
So last night I take 'er down to the range for a short session.
Here are a few first impressions.
1. This firearm is far more accurate then I'll ever be (can't wait to throw a scope on it).
2. All I had with me was some Winchester bulk ammo. Don't think it was the cause of any issues.
3. Trigger was a little heavier than what I'm accustomed to (Browning and Ruger pistols), but not drastic.
4. A couple of times, after firing a round or two, it was impossible to squeeze the trigger. Like the hammer had not re-cocked. Clearing that round it would then fire no problem.
Only put 100 rounds through it (weather was crappy and didn't want to be out too long.)
All in all I am quite happy with it. I am willing to bet that the few issues I did have will go away with a little polishing and breaking in.
I will be throwing a scope on it and maybe a Volquartsen hammer.
Looking to order that Eagle 30 rd mag, and just maybe the muzzle break! :D
And one more big thank-you to Mad Mikey for getting this thread started.
(I also agree with Hi-Standard, in that a 597 "sticky" should be added)

eagle magazines

It doesn't appear the eagle magazines have steel "lips" on the end. Are the remington magazines metal or composite? Does anyone else think that composite feeding areas are a bad idea? I mean semi .22 are meant to be shot, alot. Also are there speedloaders for these? Hopefully the aftermarket will support the 597 as well as another semi out there, because I for one feel the 597's design is superior. Design is only one part of the fun equation, who out there doesn't enjoy emptying a magazine or three at helpless shilloutte targets :ar15: :D

Will be in the market for the Eagle 30 rd mag and possibly the muzzle break soon.

And so it begins...

I have the Volquartsen hammer and extractor already and 2 eagle 30 round mags on the way arriving tommorow! You will love how the volq. hammer makes the trigger so light and crisp! Can not really see the muzzle break doing a whole bunch though other than the look cool factor... but it might be handy to keep the muzzle down while doing a mag dump with the new 30 rounders... I really hope they work as well as the factory mags!
