An "honest and objective" 597 post

I have the Volquartsen hammer and extractor already and 2 eagle 30 round mags on the way arriving tommorow! You will love how the volq. hammer makes the trigger so light and crisp! Can not really see the muzzle break doing a whole bunch though other than the look cool factor... but it might be handy to keep the muzzle down while doing a mag dump with the new 30 rounders... I really hope they work as well as the factory mags!

...well at least the latest generation of 597 mags. right DAR ;)

Mad Mikey :p

I have one eagal mag 30rd for the 10/22 and havn't worn out the feeding lips it doesn't look like there is any wear at all. Its quite a bit more reliable in my gun than the BC steel lips for some reason.

Another 100 rds through it, different ammo (CCI Blazer and Eagle stuff), and still just the one issue.
Once in a while, the sear (hammer?) hangs up, and it feels like the safety is on.
Clear that round and away we go.
Doesn't seem to be any pattern to when this happens.
Anyone else encounter this? If so, what did you do to fix it?
I'm really against sending it away for warranty work, as it seems like it could take some time coming back.
As posted earlier, the Volquartsen hammer and extractor are on their way. Is this the answer?
Any input would be appreciated.

I only shot about 130 round thu mine (one trip) but everyting worked fine...I'm going to the range in a couple of hours to test the rest of the ammo. will post a short report when I'll get back...:)

Mine did that too. Mainly when shooting sub sonics. The bolt is short stroking and not reseting the hammer. I fixed it by polishing my bolt and guide rails. Also lube the guide rails with a dry lube and when you tighten the guide rod screws don't put them in at the 10 lbs. recommeneded by Remington, just tighten them finger tight. The Volquartsen hammer will help. I polished my factory hammer by ordering a Volquartsen this week.

Ontgunner, I've had the same problem before too just seems to happen whenever it wants too. So far my 597 seems to like the cci mini-mags like I've stated before. They are better quality then anything else I've tried. Also have some velociters and stingers that need to be squeezed off, heard good things about both of them.

Another 100rds (50 "Dynapoints" and 50 Federal "Champions")... NO REAL ISSUES!!:dancingbanana:
The last clean/oiling I did, along with the Volquartsen hammer really did the job.
I still have to install the new extractor, as I did have 3 FTE's, but this is minor comared to the issue of the hammer not properly cocking.
I'm still not 100% sure I would recomment this rifle (and a friend is waiting on me. I'm watching the "Marlin 60???" thread... so if you have any input;) ), but it's going in the right direction.
Cheers!

I have been looking at this gun as a first .22, but now I am getting to the point where I would rather find something that works right out of the box. As I am still a Newb I would rather not have to buy a whole bunch of new parts to get a new gun working the way it should, and have to figure out how to install them. I will be keeping an eye on this thread to see what others have to say. Please keep us informed of your progress ontgunner

Thanks to Sun_and_Steel_77 for his original post and all the information he has provided.

I love mine only been out twice with it though...shot about 300 rounds and never had a single jam. The only ammo I has any issues with was Fed. 38gr gameshock (50 rounds) where hammer didn't reset one time and twice the bolt didn't go far enough to strip the round from the magazine (I thought it was a dud) looks like it's not hot enough for the gun... othersize it's been perfect :)

Anyone ever had a 3 shot full auto happen before, ie pull the trigger once but it fires 3 times.

No, but that would be interesting  especially if you weren't expecting it! What were the particulars? .22lr / mag / HMR? new gun? Factory hammer? VQ hammer? trigger work...

.22LR totally factory and it happened again twice the next day, very puzzling

I think it is a weak reset spring - I remember reading about this situation on a US site.

If you look in the receiver the "reset" setup is a funky linkage system... anyway, the problem is in there somewhere and is spring related.

Looking better all the time! :)
Threw a scope on it last night and brought it to the range this morning.
At least 200 more rds through it.
Had one small issue (not fully cocking again, once), a tiny squirt on the guide rails just to be safe... and away we go!
And accuracy with a scope? At 19m (indoor range) my wife made a quarter sized hole with about 15-20rds! Am I happy? Oh ya baby!! :D
