I just bought a box of 200gr hot core for my 8mm without knowing how they performed. Got them for moose next fall and found the price very down to earth. Anybody uses them. Comments, experiences, pictures? I know there is a lot of super hi tech bullets out there. But do HC works and anyway i m more on the classic side. Thanks.

Hi there. I like Speer Hot Core. I also am more on the classic side. I also like to shoot a lot, and have not got an income to support 'premium' bullets. Neither do I care much about magnums. I suspect in most real life situations, a good bonded bullet, like Speer Hot Core, will serve most hunters in most hunting calibers at non magnum velocities. My last 3 moose have been shot with my .308, with 150grn Speer Hot Cores. I also have found the Hot Cores to be accurate in my rifles in most cases, like 1 1/4" 5 shot groups are the norm. I think 8mm 200grn should be a good bullet for you.

I have shot Speer hot core bullets for over 30 years in a 3006. I use the 180 grn. Round Nose. I have shot many moose, deer, bear and wolves at various ranges. I shoot a fairly hot load of IMR 4350 and the bullets have always performed perfectly.

I have loaded many 200 grain Speer Hot Cors in .300 WM. They accounted for a number of moose, elk and deer without any problems. Decent bullets.

I have been using hornady195 and speer 200 in my 8mm rifles. They are best weight class for the 8mm mausers. I have loaded in one of them 195gr @ 2675fts. Best powders I have used in the 8mm is imr 4064 and imr 3031.

You will be very happy with the 8mm, it does any job you need if you do your job( shot placement)

I used to load 180 gr Hot Cors in the .303 Epps I once owned and they were very accurate. Performance on game was good except for one big mule deer where the cup and core separated and it didn't penetrate as well as I like but it was a dead deer nonetheless.

Anyone else with a good ammo recipe?

These are my loads I have tested and I recommend.

195GR-200GR WEIGHT CLASS:

195 GR HORNDAY SP WITH 47.5 GR OF IMR 3031=2600
195 GR HORNADY SP WITH 45.5-46GR IMR 3031= 2550
200GR SPEER SP WITH 46.5 H4895.................=2405
195 GR HORNDAY WITH 46.5 H4895 .............=2498
200GR SPEER SP WITH 49.4 IMR 4064 ........=2531......Max Load.
195 GR HORNADY WITH 49.4 IMR 4064.......=2586.......USE WITH CAUTION....MAX LOAD

Is that Good or Bad ??? Just wondering if you meant they fragmented or just dropped on the spot. I used to use Nosler BT in my 300 Wm. Mag. I never seemed to find the bullet, but instant kills always. I switched to Barnes TTSX for awhile but they fouled my barrel something fierce. Now I'm going to try Hornady's GMX, but I was thinking about Speer's for my 308 Win. because it doesn't have the velocity needed for the GMX.
I load 165gr HOT COR bullets in my 300WM, deer look like they jumped on a grenade when you hit them.

I have no recent experience with them but back in the late 70's to mid-80's I loaded many, many rounds for lots of hunters and like your experience they dropped a lot of moose, deer and more than a few bears as well.Mostly in 30 cal.180 gr. but also quite a few 303cal in 180gr and 8mm in the 200 gr.My experience and those of others was they worked just fine.My 2 cents worth.

Speer HC bullets are probably the best of the C+C bullets and work flawlessly with cartridges with a muzzle velocity below 2800 fps. I have found them to be very accurate in the many calibers I have used them in and to perform excellent on game.

I get impressive kills, total energy dump and maximum damage.

Like most shooters who have shot plenty of game with Speer HC boolits, I've never had one fail
me on game as I never drive 'em hard to begin with. For target work though, I still prefer Sierra or
Lapua projectiles.:)

I've shot speer bullets for everthing from groundhogs to moose and bear , and have not found anything that will match them hands down,From varmint loads to moose they have always done the job, good impact and good expansion, have proof , with bullets from animals with good expansion and wieght retention. I also do not shoot target loads, I shoot the load that I hunt with in target and with that I have the consistency of accurracy,. Speer bullets have alway's delivered exeptional results, Over fourty year's of using, them and loading with them. A good bullet when you need it. Legend .
