And yet another lady

Hello from the Ottawa Valley...and/or GTA-ish area...depends on where I am at any given time...
'Home home' is the Valley, and then I spend quite a bit of time in the S.On for school (grad student).

Took my hunters ed and non-restricted firearms tests about 3 weeks ago. :dancingbanana:
H1 already acquired, but still waiting for all that lovey paperwork so I can get the PAL application sent off.
My primary interest in firearms is for hunting (fun fact: I was a vegetarian for almost 6yrs)...but it never hurts to learn as much as possible...and hey, one never knows what other trouble I might get myself into :D

Welcome aboard!

So, with a intro like that, you need to tell about what brought you over from the dark side? :D

I am glad to see more ladies coming out. My wife loves to shoot too.

Heh, yes I do suppose that requires a bit more explanation :p

My original reason for going veg was not an issue with eating meat itself, but how it was produced (factory-farmed, etc). Organic meat can be GD expensive and for a student like me, not going to be happening all that often! Had no problems with being veg for that long, but then last year I went to the East Coast with some friends and caved - seafood was one of the only things I missed and I thought 'well, the lobster is local, at least!'. Then that got me thinking about what to eat, not eat and (this is making a much longer story, short :p) figured that if I hunted and killed it myself, it was more ethical and healthy. Not to mention that I think it's a good skill to have, one that's being lost sadly. My dad and brother hunt, so it wasn't something I was opposed to even while I was vegetarian.
So, that's the very short version of that transition.

That aside, thanks for the welcome folks! :)

From one Grad Student to another - welcome! :)

I love your reasons for wanting to hunt your own meat - I fully agree! Although, I admit that I still eat plenty of beef and pork produced commercially... but I respect your choice and can respect your reasons for hunting even more! :dancingbanana:

Fortunately, my lady LOVES vension, and all the more 'cause I shot it. The satisfaction of eating the fruits of your own hard work, be it from a garden, an orchard, or the woods, is immeasurable. As an aside, I went to a wedding in Douglas, in the Ottawa Valley, and had a blast, though that was MANY moons ago. Nice to have you on board, and I love your reasoning. May the hunting gods smile upon you!

Thanks again folks :)

Doc M - I'm guessing from the name (though I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time!) you're a PhD student? As for meat consumption, I still eat meat produced commercially, but not a great deal of it. Though, once I get into hunting I'd hope to source most of my meat consumption from that. Not only is it potentially healthier, but I think there's something to be said for being involved in producing ones own food. Like gardening...but...not. :p

Heh BeeRex,
You got your head on straight.
If being female means that you will learn to excell as quickly and thoroughly as my daughter and her friends have, well then 1000's of us here will be very pleased for, and proud of you.
Ask any question here, on any topic, you will be responded to by some pretty savvy folks.
Ask questions. It's fun.
There's a lotta bush in this country, your welcome to a coffee in my camp anytime.

Thanks again folks :)

Yes Bee, you're correct in your deduction! ;)

My buddies have called me "Doc" since I was a kid, as a result of being "Captain Too Much Information" about a lot of worldly subjects... so I figured I'd make it official! :)

I truly enjoy the venison I shoot every year, and it makes a very nice supplement to commercial meats. There's no better "snack for the game" than venison pepperoni, which I make myself too - out of the trimmings. I butcher my own game in the garage/trim it up in the kitchen, so there's almost zero wastage. It's definitely something to get into if you can.

It's a shame you're not in Alberta, or I'd be happy to let you in on one of mine this fall - it's always nice to have a set of experienced hands showing where the primordial cuts come from in 3-D, lol!

Welcome to the forums. Everything you're looking for and then more. Be sure to check out the new podcast "Canadian Reload Radio" under General Firearms as well!

You may find our recent episode interesting as we talk about hunting and why it's so important!

Thanks again everyone! :) I have to say, while I've joined/been a member of a few forums, it's the ones that are related to hunting, firearms and the outdoors that have been the most informative and welcoming. Not that I'm surprised, but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that it would surprise some folks.

Doc, or should I say Captain? Ha! Too true though, might as well make it official. I do plan on learning how to butcher and prepare my own meat - another useful skill to have. And y' never know, I just might find myself out in Alberta and take you up on that :)
