First, I want to thank all those who helped me with my first attempt at reloading the 45/70. I am very happy with the results and thought I would share.
The rifle is a recently acquired Marlin 1895GS stainless Guide Gun that came from cccan. Cam sent me some targets with the gun and it is a proven shooter. I wanted to load up some 350gr Hornady FN as the rifle will be going to my father who will be doing some guiding this year (he is busier now that he is retired
). Thanks to 240gord, I was able to load up some 350FN's and some cast 405gr.
I mounted a Leupold VariX-1 2x7 for load development and once sighted in, my load testing was done at 100m.
First load - was intended for sighting in, but did well on its own: 405gr cast in front of 44.0gr of IMR3031.
Second load - will be the hunting/guiding load: 350gr Hornady FN in front of 53.0gr of RL-7. The recoil does get your attention, but the results are worth it.
Disclaimer: Please note, these loads are safe in my gun and caution should be exercised at all times while reloading.
