First, I want to thank all those who helped me with my first attempt at reloading the 45/70. I am very happy with the results and thought I would share.

The rifle is a recently acquired Marlin 1895GS stainless Guide Gun that came from cccan. Cam sent me some targets with the gun and it is a proven shooter. I wanted to load up some 350gr Hornady FN as the rifle will be going to my father who will be doing some guiding this year (he is busier now that he is retired ). Thanks to 240gord, I was able to load up some 350FN's and some cast 405gr.

I mounted a Leupold VariX-1 2x7 for load development and once sighted in, my load testing was done at 100m.

First load - was intended for sighting in, but did well on its own: 405gr cast in front of 44.0gr of IMR3031.

Second load - will be the hunting/guiding load: 350gr Hornady FN in front of 53.0gr of RL-7. The recoil does get your attention, but the results are worth it.

Disclaimer: Please note, these loads are safe in my gun and caution should be exercised at all times while reloading.:D

Awesome stuff James!!! I am contemplating using the guide gun for spring bear as well as deer and elk. Moose as well if i draw. Handy guns with loads of power. I will testing out the Tru Glo sight tomorrow.

James what will be the sight of choice after load development for your gun??

Thanks Mark. I am not sure on what sight to go with. I am curious to see how you make out with the Tru Glo. I have the Fire Sights on my 870 slug barrel, and those work pretty good...we'll see.

Thanks for the update James! Your father is going to like that little gun!

Now just add about 9 more grains of 3031 and get those 405's movin ;) :D

I'm interested in your results with the cast bullet, can you give details on bullet type, size, design, GC or no, hardness, manufacturer? That is a very light load and I wonder if you tried to develop it. I shoot hard cast GC bullets to 2000fps and get accuracy around 1"(similar to your 350gr.). I appreciate any info you can give.

I think what we should do is post the best targets that have been shot with a 45/70 guide gun...there would be some real eye openers

This was at 75 yards with just a quick bore sight and not zeroed. The Guidegun that pulled this off is now in Sask. owned by Jasonsmack. Don't mean to hijack James!!

Ben,

I am a newbie with reloading the 45/70. The cast 405gr's I received in a trade along with the Hornady 350's. I am not sure, but they might be Bullet Barn bullets (?) - just a 'wild ass guess'. The load was taken/borrowed from some (can't remember where) Inter-web source and I checked the books to make sure it was safe. I only wanted a tame load to sight in the scope and I got lucky as it grouped half decent.

Sorry I can't be too helpful.

Cheers!

James
