Felt like re-doing an SKS, maintaining the all great features of these beautiful rifles. I didn't make any major changes to it, just tried to make it classic, functional and attractive.

The big job was removing all the oils from the wood, so it would take the black stain evenly. This stock was literally soaked all the way through and it took many days, many, many hours to remove it.

Secondly I detailed all the metal including polishing the trigger, bolt and action. This thing is crisp and buttery. Also narrowed the front post and black-blued every bit of metal.

Looks fantastic, good job. Do you notice an improvement after narrowing the front sight? How much thinner is it now?

I didnt measure, but I would guess that I took off maybe 1/4 of it. Havent done any serious shooting with it yet, but I think I prefer it like this. I'll put a few more rounds through it this week hopefully.

How did you get the oil.out of the stock? I sanded mine. Its taking the stain evenly but it does seem to have a harder time soaking in as opposed to the .22 stock I'm doing as well.

Ah... Was that a non-refurb?

It probably could have passed for one, as it had its all matching parts including stock with markings. However, it had the black bayo and also appeared to have an additional finish on the stock.

As for getting the oil out. I tried degreaser, also wrapping the stock and baking it in the oven. I even tried soaking in very hot water. Through many repeated attempts with all those methods seemed to get it out. The black is particularly difficult to do properly so I de-oiled more than I normally would have. Also want to use a product with a high quality, fine dye like Saman stains or Aniline dye from Lee Valley. MinWax has the poorest quality dyes available.
