I'm not entirely new to guns as I have a Izmach Biathlon 22, Australian Arms Enfield 308 and a Sabre Arms AR15. I shoot in matches here in Halifax 4-6 times a year and practice when time permits.

I have the chance to buy a slightly used Beretta 92f for 500 bux including a holster. I can also get dealer cost on any new CZ. I'm thinking the 75 Phantom.
I'm not too familiar with shooting handgun but it looks like a lot of fun.
I want to stick with 9mm as it seems to be the most popular where I'm located.

Any advice from this bunch would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Of the two go with the CZ-75 Shadow, it's superb. Amazing single action trigger, good sights, heavier frame and low bore axis which helps control muzzle flip. Plus there are a lot of places to get after market parts for it.

Hi Keslow, I just challenged my black badge with a Beretta 92SF. It's a great gun with good sights. On the downside, the double action trigger pull is terrible. It's very long and heavy so you need a very good trigger control. Also, the mag release is in such a bad spot and sit flush with the grip panel. If you want to do a speed reload, you must break your grip and lose valuable time. A oversize mag release might solve this issue.

You might want to try a CZ and go with a Shadow SP01. You will see much more CZ than 92SF in matches that's for sure.

Good call! I have a CZ 75B but Beretta 92FS is a better gun IMO. CZ Shadow on the other hand is a very good gun too.

Trigun

Phantom polymer/steel
Beretta alloy/steel
Shadow is steel/steel.

Very different weights - Phantom 1.8, Shadow 2.6 pounds, FS92 in between. Would think Glock & Phantom more comparable.

Berreta decocker on slide
Shadow safety on frame.
Safeties operate opposite to each other - issue if used to one direction through other pistol?

Grips quite a bit different too.

For me, Shadow (yes know OP asked Phantom) feels better than FS92 and shoots accurately more easily. However... I also own an Inox 92... If had to choose between Glock and FS92 would go with FS92.

My ranking - Shadow, Inox, Phantom, G17.

If you end up with the Phantom, please post review - tempting, so very tempting...

Buy the one that fits you best. For me, of the two, it's the CZ.

That said, I've owned many Berettas and $500 is a good deal for a 92F if it's in nice shape.

NAA.

The Phantom is getting good reviews from guys on the CZ forum. CZ has a reputation for making very good pistols and the Phantom appears to be no exception. While not as well known as the striker fired polymer guns from what I have read you won't be disappointed.

I handled one last summer while down in Seattle and I ws very impressed with it's balance. The decocker is a nice feature as well. IF you replace the mainspring with a 13# or 15# mainspring the trigger becomes very light.

Take Care

Bob

I really appreciate the input so far.
Since I'm heading to the Shot Show in the new year, I'll try to get some time to walk around and handle some of the many guns.

Ive owned both a 92 and a CZ75.

The Beretta was a beautifully made gun, extremely reliable and well finished.however,I never got to like it much.It had a really poor trigger, large bulky grip(which felt as if I was shooting a 2X4) and felt too "top heavy "with its heavy, clunky slide and light alloy frame.I just never got to shoot very well with it,so I sold it

I really like the CZ75s and their derivatives(esp the Tanfoglios).Ive had a few over the years and they have all been great.Very good ergonomics, good triggers, accurate. The Shadow in particular is a great gun.I also feel that CZ's will stand up to more rounds than a Beretta will.

One just has to look at what the top IPSC shooters are using at the moment, there is hardly a Beretta to be seen, but lots of CZ,s.That should say something

DA/SA always seemed like a pain in the ass to me, stick to one trigger pull and learn it well just like you do with your rifles, when I choose a gun I always look for bad reviews, as well as the good ones and that will help your decision. CZ all the way....

Do you like shooting 1911s, because the way I see it, the Shadow is THE double action capable 1911-style grip pistol (especially with the location of the safety).

I own both, they are two slightly (yet significantly) different guns. Here's my 2 cents.

Thye both have DA/SA triggers, in the case of my guns, the Beretta has a very long smooth double action pull, and a fairly crisp single action pull. The CZ came stock with a very gritty double action pull, and a creepy single action pull. The CZ is slowly breaking in however.

The Beretta has a decocker/safety that is mounted on the slide (not the ideal location imo), while the CZ does not have a decocker, but rather a conventional safety, mounted in a more conventional spot on the frame.

In my case the Beretta was vastly superior in terms of fit & finish.

The Beretta is a large gun, larger than it needs to be. It's not for the slight of hands. The CZ is much slimmer.

It's worth mentioning that both of these guns have tons of aftermarket goodies available.
