Another Magpul UBR thread.

Gents:

If I may add a couple of thoughts.

Not that long ago, I had a long telephone conversation with Justin in the Tech Department over at Magpul. While the UBR can be used as a stock in Any AR application, the major thrust was to offer a good balance, firm check weld for use on 16" inch barrel carbines that had heavier profiles, usually longer rails and magnified optics. Mostly what he was talking about is what I consider to be a short rifle, or what others might call a recce carbine. (no sure how to spell that  )

To that end I will share a couple examples that I built, where I think the UBR enhanced the performance of the carbine.

This is one I built for use as a service rifle with a colt 16.1" Hbar profiled chrome lined barrel with a 1-7 twist and a carbine length gas system. A full auto bolt & carrier group along with a H-2 buffer were used to tame the recoil impulse.

The next is one I built as an "All round" very short rifle, that could preform well (perhaps not perfect but well) form CQB to 3-400 meter engagement. The basis for this one was a Noveske 14.5 Afghan upper with Mid weight profile barrel with a 1-7 twist, a mid length gas system, and topped off with a Specter DR 1-4 Calibrated for the M885 ball:

Remember, this is a fantastic product, but in won't the the ticket for ALL application, and you need to keep that in mind when mapping out your builds.

Just food for thought.

Here's mine. It's a little different now, I added VCAS sling, LaRue FUG and changed the used-in-iraq LaRue mount for a new one.

For this gun, I like the way the UBR balances it. I have some shorter ones, 14.5" and 10.3" that I like different stocks on. The 10.3" has a CTR but I'm gonna change it out for an ACS. And the 14.5" is gonna get an ACS as well.

WP:

Nice!! That looks like KAC Carbine to me. If I may ask, how long is your barrel, and how long is that rail?? (a guy with a builders mind want to know!!:) :D )

Thx for posting and taking the time.

It's the Knights SR15 IWS E3, 16" barrel, with the mid-length URX rail, with Knights mid-length(battle rifle) gas tube.

Not sure on the length of the rail though.

Kevb would know the length.

I usually run the UBR 1 or 2 clicks out from closed. I just had it pulled out for the pic. :p

I think one option for the 16" barrel and long rail configurations thats underrated is the PRS. I like the idea of a solid, full stock (A2 style) for these types of rifles. When you compare the numbers between the two, they're not that different.

UBR
Weight w/ receiver extension = 1.56lbs.
Stock Length = 8.00" - 11.30"

PRS
Weight w/ receiver extension = 1.85lbs.
Stock Length = 10.45" - 11.45"

For the sand box guys, the few extra ounces may matter but for us rec shooters its a non-issue. The LOP is close aswell, leaving these two stocks similar overall. I have a PRS on my 16" w/ 12" rail, I find the rifle balances well and the overall comfort is excellent.

More options:

Variation 1: Service Rifle

Variation 2: CQB and short-range 3-gun

16.1" Noveske stainless barrel with Ion Bond coating and mid-length gas system, Troy MFR-R rails, Stag upper, RRA lower. Aimpoint Micro H-1 or Falcon Menace 1.5-5 both in Larue mounts, Troy front and GG&G MAD rear BUIS, BFG Redi-Mod and Magpul BAD. Missing from pic is BFG padded Vickers sling, cuz lightweight she is not ! (9.3lbs).
