So after using my "king of all bubbas" for a few months I decided I needed to start fresh with a new design. I picked up this chinease sks for $170 off of facebook but once I got it home I liked it to much to chop it up. It's the bottom one the top one is the original sks build rifle back in its original form.

I ended up buying this Russian sks for $100. It's all mix matched numbers but looks to be in good shape.

I started machining some aluminum stock that will make up the "lower reciever". I will be using a mostly unmodified AR15 trigger assembly. The hammer requires some slight modification to be able to strike the sks firing pin.

My plan is to make a new front grip and reuse the buttstock from the sks stock. I will be drilling the reciever of the sks so that the aluminum lower will be able to be pinned on. I am also going to cut the "duck bill" off of the magazine and adding something to the aluminum lower to accept the modified magazine.

Here's a few more pictures of the current progress.

I bent the spring and it has been working well ever since. But there were a few issues with it that I wasn't happy with. The hammer wasn't hardened so the bolt has been chewing at it. The spring is pretty mangled looking but functional. Also the trigger pinches your finger if your not careful and it sit crooked so I pretty much stopped working on it.

doesnt seem like there is much interest in this project, but ill stick this picture here anyways. this is far from finsihsed, i mounted the buttstock and tapped everything else in place just to see how the layout would work out. my mill chuck came loose thats why the taper is so extreme on the end, but makes it look kinda like a Galil.

why not make the whole lower out of aluminum and integrate a nice grip position where the lower hand guard would be. The problem with the hical sabertooth stock is in my opinion way to much un needed aluminum on there. I bet that rifle of theres ways over 12 pounds. Im interested to see where this project goes, good job.

I too am interested in this project (I just stumbled onto it now)

I like using up my less than perfect, mismatched SKSs for these type of projects.I did something similar to a Chinese ,making it look Dragunovish and last year did a tear down of a Russian beater and made it look al la AK.

Some folks don`t like these builds (sacrilege of some sort) and you risk being called a heretic and a witch ,but watcha gonna do LOL !! If you like messin around in the shop (don`t we all) and have an old SKS ,why not see what`s possible.

I think my Dragunov version is floating around the red rifle section in a SKS "let see your SKS" thread.I can try and post pics some day of those projects ,but in a separate thread as not to take away from this one.

Good work ,and post lots of pics ,I love these threads.

Cheers

Wow Thanks for the replies! I guess I must have snuck in and got lost in the new threads. I have a lot of ideas this just happened to be the route I took at this time. My machining is rough to say the least. Once I get this one finished I may look at building another lower with some different designs. I will keep everyone posted on progress. I tend to have a lot of projects on the go at once and some get stuck to the back burner haha.

Exceptional work! This looks a ton better than hical's sabertooth with how you are arranging the grip/trigger guard.

Any possibility to machine it in a way to take regular AK mags? Machine the back for a 'pignose' AR stock adapter? Front of the receiver to take a longer handguard?
