Another update to my land issues... Several people charged with various offences

So I have posted before about having trespassers on my hunting property, and then someone put a rock through my back window last month on the opener. I went to the area yesterday afternoon and saw 2 trucks parked on the road. Upon getting to my gate I found the chain cut and it was wide open (the no trespassing sign, and the letter authorizing the OPP to enter were still on the gate). I called the OPP and luckily enough a cop was in the area. 15 mins later the PC showed up and we proceeded to check the property. We found 3 men hunting (all locals). All 3 were given trespassing tickets. One hunter did not have a turkey license or a PAL, so he was charged with several offences. I am not sure what he was charged with, as the cop had me leave the immediate area when he was dealing with them. That guy left in cuffs in the back of the squad car, with his shotgun in the trunk. I hope this ends the crap I have been dealing with. This turkey season has been a massive bust for me and my wife. This was her first "proper" hunting season out in the bush. The antics of the locals has been insane.

The kicker is, if they asked to hunt, I most likely would have let them, in exchange for some meat. After all this, no strangers will be welcome on my property for a long time.

So a big thank you goes to the OPP. It should never have gotten to this level of animosity.
 
Im in Bancroft, I have 100 acres, & there are allot of "idiot' local hunters here, & some really awesome ones too. What area is your Hunting property?
 
Arclight, you have had quite the season and sadly when I read your posts the trespassing issues I had on one of my properties pales in comparison. I hope this will put an end to the trespassing issues and your next turkey season will be better. I really can't comprehend why people think it is ok to go on someone else's land, you wouldn't do it in town so why is it seemingly ok in the country? I get this all the time with folks on ATVs going thru my land, invariably they answer just out for a ride until you notice the shotgun strapped to the ATV. When I first bought the property I would have let others on it, but like you after the trespassing issues, not likely. I hope your spouse is not to jaded and next year will be an excellent turkey season for the both of you!

Thank you. I hope this puts an end to the antics. I will be up there all summer hunting coyotes. So I can keep a eye on things. I have a suspicion that the controlled deer hunt will be a gong show. I am going to put up some game cams near the gate. I am giving serious thought to a pinhole cam on the gate it's self. I told the cop to hit the property hard with his buddies. I said I will call if I or anyone else is up there.

Mrs Arclight took it pretty well when the window was smashed. I expected tears but she didn't. She was more mad then anything. The glass guy was awesome. First thing he did was offer his truck to get back out to the bush. He restored her faith in humanity. He was almost as mad as I was over it - and he does not hunt.
 
Wandering onto someone's property is one thing. Cutting locks, parking a vehicle and then hunting without proper licences to boot is beyond stupid. These guys must have been extras on Schitts Creek. The OPP will be able to lay some serious charges over this. I realize you are pretty choked right now but once the dust settles there are probably some honest local people kicking around. Giving them permission to hunt may go a long way to protecting yourself. This is the approach my cousin took on his farm and they police things when he is not around. Good luck.

Some food for thought... I was thinking of inviting the cops that want to hunt up there for deer season. It is teeming with deer.

I need to find the right locals. The cop asked for my ID and PAL when he arrived. He said he did not think there were many hunters and gun owners in Toronto LOL. I said we were a minority. And I was a redneck trapped in the city... with a wife and a job.
 
Sad part is, stupid as they are, they will really get vindictive and create a lot of destruction in the future. If you are not on site constantly, be prepared for it. As well, you can't expect the OPP to be your continuing watchmen. They will react as they did in this incident, but overall, your chunk of hunting paradise is not a big priority for them considering what other daily priorities they have to deal with. It's called the joys of being a absent property owner. Most locals really do not like the invasion of "Torontoite's" into local areas they have used for generations. Just a fact of life........................

I know. It will be hard. I now pack handcuffs in my pack incase I run in to trespassers. Sooner or later the idiots will move on to greener pastures.
 
Call a Bylaw or OPP I guess depending on the area you are in and have the vehicles towed as well. Either way there is a big pissing match going on now and they will not be happy. A few cameras set up to get pics of any intruders may be useful for future reference. Wish you luck with hopes they leave you alone. Chances are they will find another way in so their presence will be harder to detect.

I asked about towing, I was told I don't own the road, so they won't tow them. I bought a few CCTV signs this morning and will put them up.
