Hey, does anyone know if there are game laws for Antartica and are Emperor Penguins protected? I'm down to 2 continents not yet hunted and would love to club (sorry harvest) a penguin in Antartica just to have hunted all 7 continents. For those of you aghast at such a thought, it's a"bucket list" thing, besides how cool would a life mount Emperor be?

i might be talking out of my a$$, but i would argue that since (i assume) you are a canadian citizen, and canada has signed the antartic treaty, that since i am unaware of any canadian law forbidding hunting in antarctica, and since things that aren't illegal are legal, that you are good to go.

i also wouldn't be surprised if chile or argentina have something in thier laws regarding hunting in antartica.

you may be SOL

canada does have the "Antarctic Environmental Protection Act" which says":

12. (1) Except in accordance with a permit or under the written authorization of another Party to the Protocol, no Canadian shall, in the Antarctic,

(a) kill, injure, capture, handle or molest a native mammal or native bird

there is a permiting procedure, but i'm doubtful as to you success.

my gut tells me the best chance is with the argentines or chileans.

I've been to the Antarctic. I can tell you that if you were to take private transportation to this no man's land no one would be around to see you hunt a penguin. However there is no sport or meat in a penguin.

I'd say you are SOL on hunting there. I was on Antarctica last year and got to talk to several of the researchers. The agreement posted earlier in this thread is taken super seriously. Too bad you dragged your heels on doing it though, 50 years ago penguins were considered live meals waiting to be served. :p

Note: living without terrestrial predators has made pretty much all the birds there completely feerless to humans. Diving with them was a different matter- penguins would take off in the water thinking we were seals trying to eat them! :D

I always wanted to taste a penguin, I'm of the theory the cuter the animal the better it tastes. :)

Just for fun if I'm in a place like Subway and the person there just looks miserable I'll ask them if they make anything with penguin and then let the wackyness ensue...

A few years ago wife and I watched a documentary on cats (!!!) and the impact their hunting and killing has had on small game populations on the planet. ie: in Britain they have wiped out songbirds in most populated areas. Anyway, in Antarctica cats had been abandonded at some of the old research sites and there was now a sizable population of feral cats doing their best to eat as many penguins as possible. Now here's the cool part: there was a crew of guys from New Zealand who had the neat job of travelling to Antarctica to shoot cats. Not do sissy scientific stuff, not do anything but hunt cats. And I got stuck painting houses for a living.

Meh. You can probably source an actual Penguin from one of the many zoos that are culling out some of their flocks. They sell off lions and tigers every now and then, too.
I knew of one taxidermist that was buying them, he was the one that explained it succinctly. Not every animal is suitable for the breeding program, and they gotta choose sometimes.

But anyway, you could probably get one, and have it stuffed.

Once it's in the trophy room, you can do what every hunter does. Make up lies! :D

Cheers
