Antelope by the dozens...

Interestingly there are only 200 doe antelope draw tags per year for all of Alberta. Obviously threatened and closely managed.
Trains not included.

I'm with you on this one. There's lots that could be done, slow the bloody trains down when there is that much snow for one! It's all about these corporations making money, it's all they care about. Judging by the landscape they should've been able to see that heard from at least 500 yards away. By slowing the trains down they might have been able to slow down enough to give the antelope a chance.

Another rail expert. Yeah, let's penalize companies for doing business in Canada. That's the smart thing to do. - dan

So my teacher was right....there is a real world example for the dreaded train math problems...

If a CN rail train is traveling at 40mph and a herd of antelope are 2km ahead of the train traveling 30mph in the same direction, how many Internet experts does it take to explain physics and animal behavior incorrectly?

Funny.

CN doesn’t see many antelope in western Canada. CP is the problem.

Nope not a rail expert but I do have experience with corporations especially the forest industry so don't get me started on that. I do know that if you allow corporations to do as they please they will. They could easily do things to make it better. It's not rocket science. It's hardly penalizing a company.

Ok so lets pretend the engineer was able to see them 500 yards away. That would have given him about 16 seconds to be able to do something. Do you really believe that is a sufficient amount of time to slow down a loaded train enough to have prevent anything?

No I don't. Did you understand what I said? If they are operating in a known area for antelope in deep snow run at a slower speed so the train can slow down quicker. CP Rail are supposed to be the experts they should be able to come up with some ideas, it's up to them. What happened there isn't acceptable. This isn't the first time this has happened. Maybe make some crossings for the antelope or patrol the tracks. Doing nothing won't help. I guess we'll find out what happens after they investigate it.

Canada's Railways have always been special, John A. made them that way and nothing has changed since then. Same attitude that leaves grain on the tracks in Banff and kills bears.

Grizz

Did the engineer blow the horn?- If he did I didn't hear it in the video.
I don't know about pronghorns, but deer always head for the field when I see them on the road and lean on the horn.

Yes the horn was going full on for most of the video - for all the good it did. The engine windows were likely closed so the sound was muted. Maybe check your volume control...
Just like deer in the evening. Honk the horn and they dash into the middle of the road.

Well, it’s in mainstream media now. It’s all being investigated. I suspect the guy who made that stupid video is done. I also agree there has to be a solution somewhere if people put their heads to it. It will come down to cost unfortunately.

Pete. During the Mulroney years a national safe railway act of some sort was proposed in legislation. Regarding uncontrolled railway crossings better signage more lights etc. This was shot down by Mulroney himself. This after years and study by various experts. If the big rail companies along with big government don't give a flying feck about humans then certainly any wildlife do not stand a chance. But they send out thier little private police force to ticket citizens for crossing trespass however the native blockades get a pass go mostly.

So we live in the age of satelites, drones, and automated systems. No one can say their isn't a solution. Its just not in their budget. Honestly killing a large chunk of a heard this way should be straight up illegal, as the technology exists to avoid these incidents. ( I'm talking heards not individual animals)

The Port of Vancouver have told the Freighters to slow down leaving the harbour and the straight on the coast to help the killer whales so why can't the trains slow down in certain areas.
