Anti Family

...have to say I'm surprised this thing is still going.

Oh and as it stands there is a nice (read crappy canadian tire) green gun cabinet which houses a Cooey 84 and a Marlin XL7 in .270 sitting in my room as we speak. Was funny though, my parents were doing there "As soon as you buy that rifle it's going to _____'s house". Yet once I got it home, they both shouldered it, said "huh" and then it went into the cabinet. Not a word about it has been mentioned since between us. Out of sight is out of mind I guess for them.

I know my parents don't care for guns, so I don't tell them anything about it. I tried to show my dad some pictures I took at the range, but he didn't care for it one bit...and he shot squirrels with a .22 when he was a kid, and his father was a hunter & game warden (not at same time, lol). My parents both vote liberal, so I guess that explains their anti-gun outlook.

That said, I tell all of my friends and some relatives about my hobby...at least those who are a bit more open-minded. Most of my friends are gun nuts (and a few CGN'ers too) so it's not that big of a deal to be talking about what guns I'll be buying in the near future, reloading ammo, etc. I'm even trying to get my girlfriend to come to the range to try out shooting for the first time.

My mom's a JW and about as anti as they get. There is nothing I can ever say that will change her way of thinking. NOTHING, gawd knows I've tried.

My brother in-law is also a JW and has, however, changed his way of thinking. Especially when it comes to self-defence. I get all the credit for that!!!! ;)

Aren't they anti everything from birthdays to Thanksgiving?

I still live at home, so out of respect I didn't start the whole PAL process without my parent's permission. Whether I agree with their rules or not, it's their house and in the end they decide what's allowed in it. I eased in to it VERY slowly and made sure I brought the idea up at the perfect time when my parents were both in a great mood. One night I was eating a lovely steak dinner with just my parents (I made sure not to bring it up when my little brother was present to avoid the immature "COOL I WANT A GUN" comment) I finally brought it up. I simply said "mom I'm thinking of getting my firearms license. I know in the end it's your decision, but please don't give me an answer right now. Promise me you'll think about it". She made a comment about not liking guns and she'll think about it. About a week or two later I brought it up again and got a "I don't know, I don't like guns" as a response. I simply said, ok but please think about it some more and she agreed to talk to my father about it. After a while, she agreed to let me bring a gun in to the house as long as it was locked up and I ensured her it would be. She then made some comment about worrying that if someone broke in to the house, she feels she would go for the gun. I simply responded "well even if you wanted to get to it, you wouldn't be able to".

Turns out when she was in her late teens she had a creep of an ex-boyfriend that carried a gun. When she would go out with other guys she would constantly see him through out the night which freaked her out, so I can see why she didn't like guns.

Thank god my mother is actually intelligent and listened to what I was telling her instead of being ignorant about the issue. She is now a firm believer in "guns don't kill people, stupid people kill people" and now she wants to come shooting with me some time! Since then I have had several discussions with my parents about concealed carry and they both now believe we should be allowed to carry a concealed firearm. I got her from being a timid anti to a concealed carry supporter. I love my mom :D!

LOL. My mother was kinda the same way.. I brought home my Lee Enfield and she said ''oh thats actually pretty nice!'' Then I explained to her what bubba did to it and she frowned and said ''what a shame''

Even momma hates Bubba! :D

i have a friend who is a gun owner.his wife is against firearms, and anything firearm related. my buddy and his 2 kids come over a lot now and shoot in my backyard, and i have been teaching the boys firearm safety with their dad.
his wife has sort of been giving me the stink eye, after she discovers what we have been doing. so i asked her what was her problem with firearms? her response? my cousin was killed with a rifle by one of his friends (young kids playing with it) i have heard this before too from others, but what i dont understand for the life of me, is why they think that locking dads firearms up in a forbidden closet of mystery , sneaking the firearms out of the house, and then not allowing the kids to be educated to the dangers of the firearm? that sort of actions are a recipe for disaster.

I would put it this way... Drowning is a serious risk for children but we teach them to swim, don't we...

My mom like it when I do projects on rifles. Such as refinishing a stock.
Now she wants me to refinish her cupboards. lol

My dad would be genuinely disappointed if I didn't own a rifle or two. My mom hates guns and votes Liberal. They are divorced...go figure.

Funny - your parents are doing exactly what mine did. I even had an ultra anti-hunting aunt who threatened various illegal acts if I ever hunted.

5 years later and my parent's could care less and my extended family loves deer meat :D

This thread was actually a pretty interesting read. I wish I was brought up in rural Canada.

My family is actually really supportive of firearms as long as it's within the law, but they also agree that the registry stuff is useless. It's actually kind of funny how my family doesn't fit any stereotypes about gun owners (except voting conservative). Both parents are university educated (doctors, and specialists at that. Dad did a stint in Harvard but still can't practice in Canada. Immigration laws Epic Win LOL). My family has only ever lived in urban areas (Vancouver and Toronto). And, being Asian, most people just don't see gun ownership coming when they see a rifle safe.

I personally pretty much don't fit what people think when the think of a typical firearm owner, apart from being male. It was kind of funny when my boss (working to pay my way through univ :p no parental freeloading here) saw my license when I dropped my wallet at work she gave me the funniest look and joked "I thought you were a pacifist? This doesn't suit you AT ALL! You're normally such a fairy, this completely changes how I look at you now."

My family immigrated to Canada from SE Asia and my mom used to shoot since it was MANDATORY IN SCHOOLS when she was in high school. In fact, she's probably the best shot in the family, but I hope to change that in the near future. Both parents were 100% supportive of me getting my license and pushed my brother to do it with me even though he didn't want to. They actually told my sister to get her license when she was thinking about it because they believe that you should never fear something simply because you don't know anything about it and that the best way to be safe is to know what you're dealing with.

I still remember the first gun I shot was when I was 16, my dad handed me his 12gauge with a slug in the chamber and let me have a shot. Needless to say, that was fun but it left a big bruise since I had no idea what sort of kick was coming and wasn't holding it firmly enough against my shoulder. I spent the rest of that summer with his single shot .22LR. He was of the opinion that if I was poppin' my cherry, it might as well be EPICALLY AWESOME. As for hunting, no one in my family has ever hunted, but we have done pest control on the farm and we're definitely not "bear huggers" since we did operate an abattoir. I personally would love to go hunting but really don't have much time what with working and full time school plus the fact that I haven't fired a gun in 3+ years and, even during that summer when I did A LOT of shooting (a few thousand rounds), I wasn't particularly great. All I had to work with was a 1ft in diameter piece of sheet metal at 50 yards standing with a peep sight. I got good enough to hit it 90% of the time by the end of that summer. But, I don't think that's too special, I'm not sure. Unless someone thinks otherwise and would like to complement me :p .

Now, at 21 I'm looking to get my first, and maybe second, firearm registered to me (proper firearm, I've had the BB and pellet guns for short range plinking) on Saturday if they still have them in stock.

I personally, have never found anyone in my circle who is REALLY against gun ownership. I've met firm registry supporters and people who say handguns should be illegal but never anyone who was completely against firearm ownership. Actually, I've had a couple of acquaintances who know I'm looking to purchase a rifle invite themselves to shoot it (especially those that know I can't resist a pretty face).

Sorry for reviving a thread that's been dead for 2 weeks, Just wanted to introduce myself since I've pretty much been a forum lurker the last couple of months while trying to scrape together enough money for a rifle (or two) and soaking up as much info as possible from anywhere I can find it.

Well, I want a bolt .22LR maybe a savage mk2 or a marlin 925. If I can still afford it after that, an X-bolt in .223 (hoping I can since apparently Reliable is having a sale Saturday), if not I'll just get a couple cases of .22LR and keep myself happy all holidays. If I can't find a .22 I like, I'm fine with just the X-bolt. Either way, I'm going to end up with a new rifle.

edit: also, Falkland? I haven't been up there in years... I gotta get out of urban life more often...

Well today at a family dinner with a few aunts and uncles it came up that I've recently taken my CFSC/CRFSC. One of my aunts looks at me like I just told her wanted to become some sort of baby killer.

"Why would you want a gun?" with this disgusted look
"So I can get into hunting" replying in a very non-confrontational wayf
"And why would you want to do that?" even more disgusted

LoL. A similar situation happened to me, minus the hunting as a reason (I want to target shoot). But I explained the whole male machismo (jokes):D thing and how some people just feel good when they put lead on target. My Nan understood and I actually am using her for one of my refs to get my PAL/RPAL.

Tell them you want to get into hunting becuase you don't want to eat medicated meat anymore and you want free range organic meat. Even most hippies understand that....:p

I like that. Might as well use that to convince the wife.
She does not object to eat animal carcasses, just to the killing :cool:

I couldn't get it too.

there was never fire arms IN the house when i was growing up. but when i was 10 my parents got me a little back yard archery set, with in a month they had realized that my hand /eye coordination was exceptionally high, and being the encourageing parents there were , had me enrolled in a youth shooting program.. and i stuck with it and by the time i was 13 was competing, both locally and in the BC summer games. i just recently got back into shooting, and got my PAL/RPAL, my dad soon had his after now having an excuse to buy the colt1911 and 45 revolver he had always wanted..

while my mom is rather impartial, she has no interest in shooting but has no problems with firearms, but even tho im 26 she still encourages me to do what i am good at.

Enough!!!!

My family and in-laws are the exact opposite. Guess it depends on how they grew up and how influenced they are by the main stream media.

I suggest offering to show them what the CFSC entails and take them out shooting and hunting. They'll realize that you're not out there clubbing baby seals at every corner.

Octavian, please do not use the baby seals anolgy. I was born and live in Newfoundland and Labrador. No seal hunter clubs baby seals anymore. We are all supposed to be united regarding firearms ownership, freedoms and rights. Newfoundland and its people have been getting enough crap from the likes of PETA and Paul Watson. I ask you politely to stop using that statement, please.
