Anti Family

Perhaps you need to remind your folks that 65 years ago, good guys with guns stopped a madman and a mass murderer. Remember, one of the main reasons that Uncle Adolf was able to push his agenda through so quickly was because of his gun control policies at the time. If the Jews had had access to firearms, things might have turned out a lot differently all those years ago......

Just food for thought, brother.

Paul

You are singing to the choir... That message has been delivered but they are parents, they are older, they know everything & they are always right. Best thing is that they are also capitalist and vote right wing as best they can.

You are singing to the choir...

I figured as much, brother. I was just hoping to give you a couple of points that might just make it through those hard old skulls.........:D

Keep working on them. You never know when you might break through.

you're not alone pal. i'm the first in my family to do many things.

- i'm the first fisherman
- i'm the first hard core hunter
- i'm the first 4x4 ethusiast
- i'm the first recreational shooter.

other than one uncle who hunts very occasionally, and two grandfathers who own .22's and 12ga's for the farm, i stand alone.

i have no idea what the heck my family does for fun. i'm also adopted, so i have very little else in common with them. however, being adopted means i also took on parts of my adoptive family and have very little in common with my birth family. again, i stand alone. lol.

the only positive is that my adoptive parents have been relatively supportive of my hobbies. they believe in supporting their kids' ambitions. dad even got his PAL with me, and we fish together quite a bit.
i have no friends who take outdoor sports seriously, so there i stand alone again.

Sad part is he has a rifle and pistol and 100 rounds for each sitting in his house that he likes to pretend that I don't know about. Remington model 700 BDL in 30-06 and a blued S&W 686 in .38 special.

??????

so i assume he was interested in the shooting sports, at one time and is now hardcore anti?! i've seen people go from anti to gunnut, but not the other way around..

Call the old man's bluff and tell him you've found a buyer for his evil Smith & Wesson revolver.........

I'm serious.

Years to late I learned that enjoying your hobby and talking about it will force the people you love to accept it. Learn the facts about the gun argument, ever time they bring it up hit them with facts, after awhile they will give up the fight. the added bonus of using the facts is that it's not personal and since they likely have no answers they will start avoiding fighting with you.

My wife was anti-gun when I first met her ,but after teaching her gun safety
she now see's that guns are just as safe as the tools in the garden shed as long as
they are used properly. She even accepted the fact that I carried a pistol(and a Badge) for my job for many years and I came home safely everyday after work until I retired.

Or you could always try the arguement 'If guns make people do bad things, don't you think it would be a good idea not to be giving me a hard time right now??':D

My mom dislikes guns but doesn't care about me having any......she knows the whole legit gun owners don't rob old ladies deal thankfully. My dad had guns as a kid til about his 20's (and so did pretty much his WHOLE family) but he never re-newed his lisence when all those changes happened back in 95'?

Were you eating any meat served by your aunt and uncle? That should clear up the hunting part for them.

These photos should pretty well sum up both my families and my wife's families view on guns/hunting

those r awesome pics!

personally i don't advertise the fact i am a gun owner, avoids the whole evil glares, and people trying to convince me that i am lunatic for owning them.

I have my hobbies just like other people do..... dont see me running down to the old people driving their gas powered war boat things at the lake as they fill it with gasoline and bb pellets, and telling them what they are doing mite in some way convince a teenager to build a war ship and lay siege to a canadian land mark.

My family could care less what i do in my spare time. I have a sister in law tho that thinks i am a complete loon for owning guns, but she also is the kind of person who re-uses toilet paper to save the planet, and has a shower once a month, so who is the weird one?

My father's vehemently anti gun. ...
Went absolutely ape s**t when he found out I had my license....

Sad part is he has a rifle and pistol and 100 rounds for each sitting in his house that he likes to pretend that I don't know about. Remington model 700 BDL in 30-06 and a blued S&W 686 in .38 special.

Remind him that he better have all his paperwork in order, license renewed, etc.

Haha I feel your pain brother. My mothers side of the family is quite anti. There was a death in the family when my mother and her sisters and brothers were young.. a self inflicted one.. enough said....

<snip>

If my mother can be turned, so can your aunt!! :)

This is a win... Don't misconstrue what I write to be denigrating that; but your mother wasn't turned by you, she was turned by the most powerful motivator... Self interest.
In the back of her mind she still thinks that guns are bad, it's just that now she thinks that guns are bad for everyone, except her (and her family).
It's like all those CGN'ers that were arguing that they'd be fine to have guns in a disaster; but that guns would be bad for Haiti after the earthquake because Haitians are uncivilized monkeys.

Stay on top of your mother's opinions about guns and hunting. Make sure that you remind her at every opportunity about any creeping hypocrisy.

I think I'm the first among my family to have firearms in a long-time :) (mind you, the last time anyone in my family handled an Enfield it was back in WW2 with the Canadian forces ;) ) , but I was very fortunate in that my folks are conceptually ardent in favour of about civillians being allowed to own firearms.........that :D , and my father paid me to buy myself a "real wood & metal" rifle after he saw the AR-7 I first bought! :yingyang:

license[/I]. Believes firmly that only the state should have guns. Guns are only good for killing,.

You should buy him a history book and tell him to look up examples of what happens when only the State has guns.

Of course, I've tried this approach and even after showing historical examples I still got the "well, that can't happen now, and guns are baaaaaaaad"
Drives me nuts!

Tell them you want to get into hunting becuase you don't want to eat medicated meat anymore and you want free range organic meat. Even most hippies understand that....:p

Hey thanks :)

I think when the time is right I'm going to tell her gun or not he probably would have done it anyways, and blaming the gun is like blaming spoons for making Opra fat. (The Opra fat comment is from another CGNer but I forget who)

I tread very lightly on the issue, and she's coming around. The more she hears coyotes at night playing the playful pup routine, yipping trying lure farm dogs out to the bush only to be rushed by six more hungry coyotes(it's been known to happen) the more receptive she is because of Angie. (the shnoodle)

The fact remains if someone has the single minded determination to kill themselves, they will find a way with or without a gun.

And how did you escape the JW's with your family still speaking to you?

First of all, I was never baptised. Got out when I was 15 yrs old. If you simply "leave the truth" as they call it, there isn't really that much of a stigma attached to it. And in any case, anyone can leave at any time. Lots of bull going around about JW's, but they're really quite harmless. Except when they wake you up on a Saturday morning.... :D

you have met peter haven't you ?..........he talks anyway LOL

I swear, the next time you see me y'all will be lucky to get much more than a hello outta me. I'm stitching my piehole shut! :p

I know a few JW's that own gun safes FULL of guns and every single one of them goes out hunting. So don't equate JW with Non Gun Hug a Tree (or bear) people they love the outdoors as much as we do and are just as willing to PACK a rifle in the bush for protection or hunting.

I know of only one JW gunnutter. Amongst thousands. I once asked if the elders (the higher-ups) of the congregation had an issue with firearms and hunting, I was told they didn't have an issue with hunting for sustinence. Going target shooting may raise eyebrows, however. Especially with an AR or a handgun. Growing up, I wasn't even allowed to own a water pistol.

My mother frets over my collection of 35+ firearms. Just to drive her nuts, I tell her that if she'd simply allowed me to satisfy my curiosity about firearms when I was younger, things may have turned out differently. Drives her freakin' batty LOLOL
