So I am pretty much minding my own business, pushing my 98 year old mother in her wheelchair on her afternoon walk 'taking the air' ( mother is English and 'takes the air'even in the winter) She mainly likes to see dogs and wants to stop and pet every dog we see,and the owners are very good about it....anyway,mother sees this little terrier across the street and insists to be taken over to see it....the dog owner was obviously very proud of his dog and proceeds to tell us it's a pure bred dog ,it's pedigree and parentage...now I don't understand all this stuff,so I say 'you mean it's a hunting dog'?...the owner recoils at this and says,no,it's a city dog,it's not a hunting dog, hunting is cruel and unethical,we have no need to kill innocent animals ..so that pretty well gives me the green light,I swear I don't go looking for this ....'so what do you do when your dog sees a rabbit -do you him off the leash and let him chase it? The guy says 'absolutely not ,we would never allow our dog to harass innocent animals ' .( the guy is walking right into it) I then say, well it seems to me this dog has been bred to hunt for hundreds of years and what gives YOU the right to impose YOUR moral views on your dog? ...Seems to me you are creating serious conflicts in your dog between his genetics by you refusing to let him follow his natural instincts .See,I am a canine behavioural expert and I can already see this is creating huge anxieties in your dog and it's going to take a lot of expensive therapy to corrct the damage you have already done to him....this is a clear case of animal cruelty...if you don't want to hunt, that's your business but who gives YOU the right to impose that on a hunting dog that is only doing what his genetic imprint has programmed him to do? ....the poor guy kinda stammered a bit and said he 'never thought about it that way' and I gave him the coup de grace by telling him what he was doing was 'no diferent than keeping chickens penned up in small cages,or confining steers in a feed lot ',it just wasn't natural
Tell ya, its like shooting fish in a barrel...you gotta try it sometime
