22lr hands down, enough power to get into the side of a zombies skull, but not enough power to exit, so it'll bounce around in there for a while. :)
 
Another thing to consider, is the possibility of a tube mag fed lever or pump like a Henry or Winchester. That way it's easier to load singles on the fly in the event of an emegency, no fumbling with reloading your empty mags. And if we've learned anything from Sean of the Dead, a crickett bat would make a fine backup. A nice flat side for the satisfying WOK! upside the head, but also the edge for more precise work. Way better than a baseball bat if you ask me.

I'll excuse the mistake because of the kick ass avatar :D

I don't know about the .22lr bouncing around in the head, I think that's mythbuster's territory. Test a .22lr/short squib load, subsonic, standard velocity and finally the high/super velocity ones.
 
Excellent; I hd forgotten bout that pistol. Now if someone could make a smaller version of that in .22LR and not worry about making it fancy. Something like the .45 single shot pistol dropped to the French underground. Just a form-follows-function high capacity pistol.

Or, if SHTF situation for real, we could all get Drotik-like pistols...18 rounds, 3-round bursts, 5.45 mm rounds!
 
Sorry you guys, .22LR is useless against zombies unless it shoots at like 1000rpm and u got like 20 100rnd mags. Their heads are decomposed mush so a little hole wont matter much... you need to destroy it with a shotgun or a hi-powered rifle. Machete. I wouldn't go lower than 9mm, and I wouldn't use 9mm unless they were really good hollow points to explode the head.

So unless you intend to do this:

and get some big drum mags, just get a bigger gun.

If they were totally decomposed mush, then they wouldn't be zombies, they be still dead. There has to be some intact brain matter that a .22lr would be able to destroy, or else there'd be no point in blowing up a zombies head at all.
 
does anyone know of a homemade mix that will make a substance that is similar in density and crumblility of bone? i have some gel that i could probably mix to make somewhat thick but assume much thinner than balistic gel.
