Antique handgun carry as sidearm?

It is not illegal to have an antique handgun anywhere you can legally have a loaded non-restricted firearm.
Having said that, it is highly unlikely that any law enforcement officer - police or game - will be aware of this.
At the very least, you could be greatly inconvenienced.

Speaking as a moderator, your last comment was rude, insulting and uncalled for. I suggest that you edit your post.

thanks...and its true that law enforcement officers are not aware of this.

just got off the phone with Chief Firearms Office Technical Office...

antique handguns are treated as Restricted firearms. You can only shoot on your land in Ontario if you have a Range permit....or at a Range.

every town city etc... has there own rules...

this is really complicated....

"antique handguns are treated as Restricted firearms"
Ask them to cite their legal authority for this... From what I read this is not only unsupported by the act, it actually contrary to the letter of the law.

Get it in writing and then call CILA and the NFA

Simply put, there is no legal basis for that position.
An ON ATT is valid for any restricted firearm or prohibited handgun registered to the residence of the holder.
An antique handgun is not a restricted firearm, plain and simple.
But this is what someone will be up against if push comes to shove.

Thanks for the edit.

I would suggest that pushing this with the CFO would not be the way to go.

There are those - and I am one of them - that think that this is a matter best left alone. It would be very easy to lose what we have.

Yes.
I agree with that interpretation.
But it is an opinion.
Yes it is a neat loophole. But strapping on double antique revolvers and flagging down a fish cop for a visit isn't going to end well.
And please; I think I speak for the majority of the antique owners...no youtube videos of you busting caps at coffee cans on logging roads.
It's a grey area that has been a source of enjoyment for many here. Don't do something to get the CFO's and LEO's ire up and force their hand into a court challenge.
Relax, read some post's and figure things out. Don't make a million phone calls to RCMP / OPP and get this on their radar. They really do have more important things to do.
If you get an antique, enjoy it safely...and discreetly.
Please.

Don't ask the police for legal advice, it's almost as stupid as asking on the internet. Almost. If you want a real legal opinion go and ask a lawyer that understands firearms law.

It's not actually complicated at all. Laws are only paper until they get tested in court and then it will be at the whim of the judge to make an interpretation. In other words, THERE IS NO CONCRETE ANSWER to your question. Everything you have been told is clouded by opinion.

Please don't be the jerk that ruins it for those of us who are quite happy to use discretion and maintain the staus quo. If you can't figure it out and don't have the common sense to understand what Im trying to tell you, then please stay the hell away from antiques because we don't need irresponsible jackasses running around public places wearing a six-gun on each leg and proclaiming their legal right to do so. That's my opinion.

It's not really so complicated after all, is it? :)

wow...if there is no answer...then why did you waste your time playing teacher... i do no own a antique handgun, i do not want to run around with them... i have never said that. but you did interpret my question in a different way... i am interested in owning one, just information on there limitations...
and Yes calling the RCMP and OPP is irresponsible, i should have called you...and listened to you scream at me like and **8%4^

not complicated at all..
you still did not answer the question of having 2 on you at the same time?

Rocco- You have received some very good advice on this thread. Some very good and sincere advice, from experienced people, for the good of you and others.

Are you not able to understand it?

I didn't say asking the police for legal advice was irresponsible, I said it wasn't very smart. There's a difference.

I didn't scream. I explained why you were not getting a clear answer and perhaps you chose to take offense. I suggest you read it again and this time don't let your arrogance delude you into thinking I'm referring to you. I gave you some good advice but you need to be smart enough to understand it, especially the part about common sense.

Two antiques at the same time is REALLY simple. If you engage in a lawful activity with one antique firearm then that activity will also be lawful with two antique firearms. And vice versa. Common sense won't get you out of trouble, but it could keep you from ending up there in the first place. :)
