Any advice since "AK variants" are banned?

You can make an SKS run AK mags and use an AK front sight. Could even do an AK unfold on it. Mine is almost there. Runs a surplus AKag catch, AK front sight and at some point i’ll get my underfold installed

Or you could run a TNA chassis with a little material Removed

An even more expensive solution is the Medved rifle - mechanically it is an SVD, not so much externally but modifications to that are possible. And a VERY expensive rifle to start with.

Most important is that the magazines feed 100 %. The SKS-D I had all had problems with that. Best is to have a quick magazine release and some modified duckbill mags.

Guy I know had an M78 that I greatly coveted. After many years he sold it to me at a reasonable price. Was the most disappointing firearm I ever owned. It was picky on ammo. The sights were poor. The scope mount system would not hold zero. It was not very accurate, best I could do was 3-4 inches at 100 yards.

I sold it at a decent profit and was glad to see the back of it.

I remember looking at .308 Valmet hunters hanging on the hooks at a local gun store back in the 2010s. 2300-2400cad and they didnt seem worth it. Basically a heavily used big fugly looking AK that likely took a lot of hard to get somewhat proprietary parts. Seemed like most back then thought the same thing and really only bought them to make Galil clones lol. I was budgeting to buy one for a PSL clone project. But then the Type 81 SR came out and it seemed like a much better base despite the caliber.
