I recently had the same debate. I found a hog hunter at a great price locally so I went with it. I had a couple inch groups shooting off hand with 223 vmax reloads. I have not tried anything serious off the bench as of yet. Here is the pros I came up with during my debate
Hog Hunter
Pros
-Iron sights
-Mid weight barrell (could be a con if your carrying it alot)
-Better action
-Accutrigger (depending which axis you buy)
-Threaded barrell (does not help perform but helps the cool factor if your into that stuff)
Axis
Pros
-Removable Magazine
-Weighs less
-Good project rifle (as there is lots of easy improvements to make)
-100$ cheaper and savage offered a rebate for this rifle but not the hog hunter
-Comes scoped
-Possible accutrigger
Couple things I have noticed about the hog hunter are:
1. Lots of reviews said it was hard to load the blind mag but I have not had any problems even with a scope
2. With the iron sights at max adjustment it shot very high. Easy fix as I ordered ghost ring fire sights for the rifle
3. Lots of complaints about the crappy stock (for both the axis and hog hunter). It does not bother me much but if it does Its an easy replacement with a boyds stock.
Hope that helps!
