Any interest in good quality doubles

I absolutely love a SXS, I have pumps and had an O/U but to my mind nothing tops a SxS, even a cheap one. (I must admit though for pure pleasure to blast with my winchester 9410 runs top competition, 10 shots before a reload really helps it's cause)

I agree with it must have double triggers, I just wish I had the money to have a few nicer end SxS's. I do have a WW Greener in 10 gauge, it's a beauty but expensive to shoot and really way to much gun to shoot even clays with. For waterfowl from a blind it's amazing, has amazingly tight patterns. At 10 1/2 pounds it's too heavy to comfortably use for 25 birds on the trap range, just carrying it I play out, which is too bad, with 1 1/2 oz loads it's quite pleasant to shoot.

I should by the end of the week have completed my collection of stevens 311's. I have the 410, 16 and 12, with the 20 soon to be I hope. Unfortunately the 410 isn't an A like the others. The 12 is my workhorse gun, I shoot nearly all my sporting clays and trap with it.

I'll maybe try to get some pics of the 10 and of the stevens collection by the end of the week.

Besides the bobwhite, are there any other models of affordable sxs? I'm looking at around 1000-1500. I tried my friend's 20ga AYA, and it's way better than to lug my 12ga duck gun around the woods.

A friend of mine is currently looking pretty hard at the Yildiz guns and they have some really moderately priced SxS models. He has fondled a 20ga and he liked it a lot. They only come with pistol grips and single triggers tho (i think):(

Appreciate fine doubles? You bet! I find myself reaching for a SxS sooner than an O/U most times.

I have for sale a great Merkel in the EE (shameless plug http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=207066) but I know its hard to move SxS's in Canada - just not a lot of interest in these types of firearms.

These are a couple of my ladies - A pair of Browning BSS Sidelocks. The top is a 12 ga with 28" barrels choked Mod / Full. The bottom is a 20 ga with 26" barrels choked IC / Mod.

There's just something timeless and majestic about doubles to me. Sounds a bit cheesy but it's the way I see it. It can be a cowboy's best friend, an upclass gentlemen/ladies longarm, a mean & gritty home defense partner or a handy tool for a farmer to protect his livestock's well being. Not to mention the cultural and historical signifigance as well.

I love pumps, autos, etc but a double, especially a SxS, is something I can rely on. So simple they rarely fail, but as diverse a firearm as any other with their combination of features. Then again I appreciate the same things about single shots as well.

Besides, duct-taping two barrels together for the pleasure of doubleboom just isn't very convenient.;)

Interesting take. Can't hunt waterfowl while in possession of lead, over here. Did you use non-tox for all of them?

Nope. Went for a walk on the prairie hill loaded with shells carrying an ounce of lead #6's, shot a couple of sharptail and missed a couple of huns. Arrived back at the truck, put those shells away and got out the Tungsten Matrix #5's and wandered over to a slough and pass shot for an hour or two. Other days I just load with Bismuth or TM and go for a walk.

My GF wants an English Stocked 20 guage sxs with scroll work, not wildlife, and wants as little checkering as possible and wants it to be "old and Neat".

Somewhere in the 800-1200 range.

Any of you fine sxs experts have an idea what I might be looking for?

You've got TWO BSLs?!

Yes-sir-ree! But they are the BSS-SL made in Japan - the BSL's from Belgium cost a "whack" more even though they are essentially the same gun.

The 20 came from the EE a few years ago and then the hunt for her big brother in 12 started. It was a complete fluke that I got it too! I had let a gent at our club know that I was looking for one and he passed the word around. That's where the story starts. About 4 months later I was planning to go to a gun show about 4 hours away but other committments kept me from going. Anyways, one of the guys from my club had a booth set up and right beside him was this 12ga! He called back to Vancouver and asked my friend if I was serious about the shotgun. My buddy didn't know but the shotgun was purchased anyway knowing it was good "trading fodder" I recieved a wonderful message on my voice mail about a week later asking if I was still interested in a 12ga BSS-SL....:dancingbanana:

dinsdale, I think most of us would jump at the chance to buy a gun like that in good shootable condition for that price. I'd take a dozen. You may be looking at double or more than that price.

I think a CZ would be worth considering. It's not "old" but it's "neat."

I like the Bobwhite best. No sideplates.

A used gun as described in shooting condition might be hard to find.

I sold a double barrelled shotgun last year. It took me about a month to finally get a seller for it. If it was a pump action, it would have gone within a week.

There definitely are buyers out there that want sxs shotguns, they just aren't as common.

I showed her that and while she said yes to overall , she wants the Shiny engraving and it to be Old.

I was hoping not to drop a few Grand on it as it eats in to my toy budget, will keep browsing the gun shows and local estate auctions.

I may end of spending a bunch on it , as it will be the only Shotgun she ever wants and should be special. It's just something to informally shoot with.

In deference to the wishes of your GF, it appears that she had set Sir Galahad :) on a quest that could be much time consuming if not altogether too difficult to achieve.

Regrettably, the majority of us Canadians, unlike our peers at the Stateside, do not have access to a wide variety of resources/inventory available to choose from - hence, IMHO, the only option in your case may be to consistently explore, among other areas - the used gun racks as well as gun shows to acquire the item you/she may have in mind.

On the other hand, should you end up planning to go for something new.....something like the Fabarm Classis (aprox $2k+) or Beretta 471 Silver Hawk (aprox $4k) immediately comes to mind.

Come to think of it, when I last passed by Precision Arms (in ON).....they had a used AYA No. 2 (sidelock) in 20ga that appeared to me to have the dimensions of my Bobwhite 28ga....well, almost nearly :) All those sxs that I mentioned have what she may be looking for i.e. scrollwork so to speak, "shiny" receivers + the English stock.

What kind of double was it? Because I think there are more than one. Did you get a buyer or a seller for it? :)

With very few exceptions a love of fine shotguns is God's way of saying that you dont make enough money.

God tells me that frequently.

Yes, used to buy the Double Gun Journal that comes out quarterly in the hunting magazines section of my local store. Stopped because it was just depressing me.

I would LOVE to buy fine handmade doubles, but since I can afford a Canam Grizzly, I will buy the Grizzly. Now if uncle 649 comes through...

Not sure who put it out. It is very high quality, brown embossed cover, about 3/4" thick. Covers fine doubles of all kinds, shotgun AND rifle. Gun#### for the Purdy and H&H lovers out there. Usually a couple of hunting articles as well and interesting antique finds.
