Any Long Distance hunters here?

I expected nothing less. You should post your long range hunting questions on the longrangehunting forum. It's almost nothing but serious over there.

Not really old farts here, just mostly traditional hunters.

Faack never mind I forgot how stupid this site can get. Too many newbies & oldfarts with no thought to different ways of hunting. I'm out & the mods can lock this bull####e.

Any long distance hunters here on the board? If so, what are you hunting? What distances are you taking shots? What calibre rifle do you use? Pics? Cheers fellow CGNer's,

My longest shots were, 310 and 489 paces. There is no "intent" to hunt at long distances, however, I'm prepared just in case there is that long shot. I'm most confident to only reach out to 500 yards, and that's it. I love to hunt and set myself up within 200 yards, either on cut lines, open meadows and farm fields. Flat shooting cartridges, primarily magnums, is an asset for those shots beyond the norm.

not a long range hunter per say. here in nova scotia not may places a person can really stretch out a shot like out west. longest shot on a whitetail was 325-350 yards with a 30-06. have shot crows at 250 yards with the 30-06 and 300+yards with my 222 rem. on yotes I have taken them out to 350 yards with the 30-06 and 1 last winter at 525 yards with the 222.there are a few places along the salt marshes where a person could stretch the shots to 700-800 yards but i would not be taking shots that far.

the 222 should be a little better than the 30-06 on crows, there just can't be much eatable meat left after being hit with a 30 cal, can there?

I'm shooting a 300 wsm custom, IMR 4350 , 180 Accubonds @ 3150 + or - 25 fps
With a OAL of 3.095
You need a scope that's meant to shoot long range and a good range finder to start

Definitely long distance.

Sometimes we drive about 1200km (1 way) to go moose hunting! LOL

Shooting range? Depends on the year and how much a practice I've done pre-hunt.
With minimal practice - I'm confident up to 300 yards.
With lots of range time - Confidence up to 400 +

I won't take a non-confident shot, and I generally try and set myself up in places that the distance applicable.

I use my .308 for all my big game.

well so far this thread has not gone stupid

well not to the point where I'm going to have to shut it down and clean it.

So IF we can manage to keep this a polite discussion I will not have to give anyone an infraction.

Don't mind them. The last moose I took was 440 yds. Rifle is a Tikka M695 in .300wm. Ammunition was Prvi partizan 180 gr.
Aimed directly at the hump and struck the bottom of the heart. Animal had 19 points. Last moose hunt with my now deceased father in law. Awesome memory. You should have seen his face when the moose went bottom up.

I agree, some of the responses you get just make you shake your head and the laugh out loud and others make you want to break out a can of air freshener! All part of being on a public forum so try not to take it too personally!...To answer your question I have taken 3 whitetails over 500 yards, 575, 600 and 686 is the longest. I have taken numerous others between 300 and 500 yards, but have also killed them as close as 12 feet with a rifle and the last deer I took was about 80 yards.

That was just a rough calculation but from the muzzle of course.

I'll have to make an correction between my rangefinder reading and muzzle. That will allow roughly 1 additional yard of ethical hunter versus just being a lowly shooter. I'm surprised that rangefinders don't have that as an option input like fish-finders. Just an oversight I'm sure.

B&C will be endorsing one in 2015...expect to see it at SHOT Show. I hear they are also bringing out a new B&C reticle to follow these new guidelines. It will have two crosshairs....ethical and unethical.

That's typical, B&C finding a complicated solution to a simple problem. I'm just going to fit my rifles with a cork-gun string 346.9834271 yards long, minus the length of the bullet of course. I'll submit the prototype to SCI for approval, once I find a swivel rated for 180,000 rpm.
