Any love for Ruger Security/Service Six?

First I have to find a Security Six with an understanding owner as I don’t have 12.6.

I think it would be far easier to cut from the muzzle and have the front sight remounted. Cutting the forcing cone portion would mean rethreading not to mention the issue with losing a large chunk of the underlug.
The Security Six front sight sits in an elevated sight base due to the higher position of the adjustable rear sight. Cutting off the muzzle portion with this raised portion will make it easier for the gunsmith to get it to shoot point of aim.

Power Custom used to sell such a base for those shortening barrels on Smith, they were set up for either a dovetail mount front sight or replaceable blades from the DX series...

Not what i was thinking of, but there is this...

Thanks in large part to you fellow nutz, I just bought my first Security-Six, stainless, 6" barrel, .357 Magnum, near mint. Apparently it has been sitting in a safe for 35 years and was only registered last year. :)

Now the lonnnnng wait for a tranfer:(

Please post more pics to help me pass the time.

The wives of most of my buddies refer to me as an enabler... they are not wrong...

Welcome to the club. You can't go wrong with these revolvers. I'll see if I can dig up a few more pictures, as long as you share some of yours when you get it. Sounds like it is nice. Cheers.

Here's one for you:

Kit shown: HKS M3 speed loaders, cheap 6" GP 100 shoulder holster off amazon. Both work perfectly.

Oooooo...real pretty!

Mine will come with the original wood grips. Have you shot yours with the original grips? How did you find it? If you like the rubber grips better, can they still be found? I tend to prefer fuller grips.

I sure hope mine looks at least as nice as yours.

I have shot mine with the original grips, it shot very well in them. I do however prefer the hogue grips, with them on the revolver is like an extension of my arm. They also allow for easier loading with the speed loaders, as they are cut back farther than the wood grips for that reason. Both the original grips and the hogues fill the hand well, these aren't small revolvers.

I can't help you with where to find the hogue grips in Canada, I got mine from a brick and mortar store outside Corinna, ME. Check the hogue website and you can find the exact model # and possibly order them online, they still make them I believe. Cheers.

Bumping this thread. Still no luck finding one. I did see a 5” .38 special Security Six at the Petawawa gun show in 2018 ( I think?). I was tempted but it’s basically a collectors piece. Think he said it was for RCMP trials? I don’t remember the price being that bad. Tried to look up the seller due to my regret but had no luck finding him online. Forget the name but he was out of Quebec.

Sadly my friend I was going to look up went in for surgery a couple of years back and something went wrong, died on the table.

I did eventually find one that fit my needs, it's a .357 but I can overlook that. It has some cylinder end shake that results in cylinder binding when it heats up, I intend to shim it over the winter, hopefully it will be trouble free after that.

I found it at Zefarm. It was one of the worst buying experiences I ever had, took almost 4 months to complete a deal for a gun he had in stock. The guy just doesn't seem to care. But in the end I got the gun I wanted at a decent price.

Leg, I just went back and looked at his horrible website and he still shows one just like mine in stock. I will warn you however that the site is not up to date, I know when I first found it he was showing several Service Sixes, but when I contacted him most of them had been long sold.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll contact him and see what he says. Too bad it’s stainless, my barrel is blued. I’ve never dealt with him but I have not heard great things. Yours looks nice.

I have a blue 6 inch in near excellent condition, forgot the year. Sold the GP100.

Biggest tech difference between Security Six and GP100 is the cylinder lock up, Security Six locks up at back end only, GP 100 locks at the back and at the crane. Both shoot well and I always put Houge grips on my revolvers, improves feel and function no end. The full barrel under lug of the later GP100's looks ###y too....IMHO.

The 5” service six was .38 SPL only made for the RCMP trials in the early 80’s. Initially the force wanted to replace the old model 10 but they finally went with the P226 for specialized teams and kept the model 10 till the early 90’s when they switched to the 5946.

I’ve owned a few of these police service six 5” in both blued and stainless finish. They were very nice. I’ve since sold them and gave the last one I had, a blue finish in its original box, to a close friend of mine.
