Any n00b FAQ's for the AR platform?

I have read seven billion messages here on the forum, a lot of great stuff but some of it is still over the head of someone who doesn't know the ins and outs of the AR style platform. I know the pat response to this question is "go to AR15.com" but is there something here that will give me a lowdown on what's up with this Lego gun system for big kids? So far I know that you start with a lower, which I assume is a fully registered restricted firearm by definition. And then after that you bolt on whatever other parts you desire from there? From a legal standpoint, it sounds wise to squirrel away a lower in case the laws change overnight (which they would), because no matter what we will be able to buy the other parts later - right?

One thing I really wonder about it whether or not a lefty MUST get a lefty AR. Is it a matter of shell ejection? Or is it just about ease of access to safeties, mag releases, etc?

Thanks for any n00b info!

You know what...that's actually a pretty good idea.

We've got an AR-180B FAQ. There are a PILE of M-14S stickies over in the battle rifle forum. We routinely get questions coming from noobs about AR's, and we tell them that all their questions have already been answered. Perhaps we could start a thread soliciting informative posts that explain aspects of the AR and owning one here in Kanuckistan.

Once the lot of us have all spouted off, perhaps one or two of the mods could winnow the wheat from the chaff, and then sticky and maybe even lock it.

I've been bumming around for ages trying to get all the info, and it would be nice to have a complete FAQ which could be useful even after I'm no longer a newbie, for any problems I might have in the future.

And it would be nice to have something that addresses the specifically Canadian issues surrounding the AR.

As for lefties, the lefty AR's are mostly about switch positioning, but I've never had any issues with using a standard AR left handed. Casings will eject clear of your face, and you'll be fine.

But all those sinister lefties prefer their sinister rifles for their sinister schemes. :ninja:

Seriously...if you're talking to a lefty that owns a lefty AR, they get this big goofy grin on their face when they mention it...it's almost like Stag made that rifle custom for them :D
