Im thinking about picking up a 17.HM2 barrel for my ruger 10/22.......it seems like it could be fun for gophers Yes i know the price of the ammo is rediculous, ...I had a savage in .17HMR and it was a tackdriver and gave alot more satisfyable gopher destroying results:D however im not a fan of bolt guns, Any real world experiance 17.HM2 Vs 22. long rifle aganst gophers?

Some insight and thoughts would be great thanks

it's not as simple as just bolting the 17HM2 barrel onto your 10/22...

you need to address the higher operating pressures, a heavier charging handle is probably the answer, altering spring rates will also help.

you may have a difficult time sourcing a barrel for a decent price.

i don't like reccomending people go elsewhere, but RFC is a wealth of knowledge on this subject...

Kits can be had for around 400 bucks... Barrel, Spring and bolt I think... Ive seen two guys who have done it, but I have never shot them.

hm2

Yeah....i know its more then a barrel swap... But not much more really just a stiffer spring on the bolt or the large heavy cocking handle,Or add some weight to the bolt.

Lol....God id never have a marlin in my safe:p The 10/22 is my fav rimfire platform. To those few who shoot the HM2 do you find it packs more of a punch then the 22.LR??? gopher wise, I wouldent be using this setup to punch paper

albertacoyotecaller what brand barrel or kit are you using? I really want a Tactical solutions barrel but i cant find anyone in canada who supplys them, and dam USA, export permit for barrels, And UK supplyers dont sell 17HM2 its illegal there

Thanks for the replys guys

I have a sako quad, the .17hm2 or .17hmr makes any .22 rimfire obsoulte. I still use .22 cb's and subsonic's for close range stuff. The accurracy of the .17hm2 vs .22lr is worth trading in your 10/22 for anything chambered in a .17 cal.

I hardly think so!! While I have and shoot the 17's, they will never, ever make the 22 LR obsolete, period! The development and usage of the 22LR make it the chambering that will never go away. The HM2 is a bit shaky as we speak. Regards, Eagleye.

I am running a Eabco Mach II kit. I have absolutely no issues with it so far and probably 1000 rounds through it.

I went out a few weeks ago and shot over 100 gophers with the 17 mach2. The fun factor is worth the extra few dollars in ammo over the 22lr. Out past a 100 yards, I don't worry about bullet drop with the mach2 and it hits them really hard.

.17

Im looking high and low and i cant find any HM2 10/22 barrels anywere in canada..... guys with the tactical solutions barrels in .17 or 22 were are you getting them??? I want a OD green 16.5 in bolth flavours .17hm2 and .22

Places in the UK carry tactical solutions barrels, but only in the .22 i guess .17 is illegal there so im told..lol wtf:rolleyes:

Checked P&D yesterday.. they have the conversion kits there.. I think they were 430.00... Barrels are black...

Mach II

22 Obsolete. Never. However for a few extra dollars the Mach II will let me reach out to about 130 easily with some authority for those gophers. 22 is about a 80 yard gun on gophers. The pricing isn't bad on ammo compared to its brother the HMR either.

I made mine up because I thought the 10/22 platform would be great for gophers in a 17 caliber for my son who is just starting out. And it is. Only issue the 30 round banana shape magazines will not feed properly to make it reliable to use them.

I need some of those 10 shot magazines that come in a three pack deal and then I would be set. So far I am just using 5 seperate 10 shot magazines.

Right on thanks for the tip Merllin......P&D always has what i want.. Ahhh dammit albertacoyote really eh the 25 butlers dont work well with the HM2 that sucks... Have you had any KB's case seperations with your kit yet? i hear its pretty common, with that tiny little round it doesent scare me much:D

P&D don't seem to care too much about the 17 mach2. If you want to buy some 17 mach2 ammo there .. good luck. As far as I know, they don't sell it there.

The final version of my 10/17 conversion I ended up doing to mine was:

-> Volquartsen .17 HM2 barrel (20")

-> 10/22 Mag charging handle ass'y, cut down to 10/22 length but with the magnum spring still on it

-> Custom SS bolt handle (not just for weight, but makes it easier to cycle the charging handle)

-> Power Custom extra power hammer spring

-> Radius and polish back edge of bolt

Definately go the 16"-18" route if you're serious about doing it, the 20+ inchers hold the pressure curve longer and make casehead ruptures a lot more likely.

After getting everything tweaked so it functions consistently, the only time I've experienced a rupture since is if I let it go a long time without running a dry patch down the pipe - I suspect it had to do with the chamber getting full of crap and pushing the round back due to the taper of the cartridge.

I've wanted to get a .17 for bit now but i dont want another bolt action...

What would you guys think a 10-22 retails for.. and I can only find the one conversion kit ^^ 400$ umm hope this doesnt turn into a 1000$ rimfire project
