Any Ontario turkeys yet?

Well the wind is blowing so hard here today that a fellow would need to worry about the shot blowing back at him!!!!

No sense even going out, you could not call over a shrieking 100 kph wind, and your dekes might get right airborne...........:p

Maybe tomorrow..........

Doug

I went out... it was really windy, like a hurricane. Almost accidentally sent a Turkey vulture straight to hell. Thought we had a turkey up in a tree... so much wind it was hard to see. Tons of trees down all over the place, almost dangerous being out in the wind. Lots of property damage everywhere.

Great hunt last night, had a hen within 15 feet of me for about 45 minutes. Best deke you could ask for. Jake and Tom came in just before dusk as I hunkered down behind a log. The Jake came in to about 2-3 feet of me, couldnt make a move due to position. As soon as he turned, he went down. Uncle Tom came charging in right at me to see what was happening and suffered the same fate. Always took fall birds, first time with spring hunt and what a great night, unfortunately I dont get to enjoy the rest of the season. Jake was about 19 lbs. Tom was 26 lbs 10" beard 1 1/4 " spurs. Hopefully the saying tough old bird does not apply. Good luck.

Isn't there a turkey course to take on ON.? If so, what does it cover?

Pretty much everything.

Including the RULES, which maybe not everybody understands. Or maybe some folks take some artistic licence with the truth so as to tell a good story.

:p

How long is the course? any testing. how about a practical component? I have no clue but find it odd that there is a course for turkeys.
I teach hunter ed and we cover migratory birds, wonder why turkeys just wouldn't be included.

You pay money....then you pay some more.

There are two reasons for the course, one was to off set the cost of the re-introduction of Turkeys and the second was that in the States there was a high instance of hunter fatalities related to Turkey hunting.

It is more or less a cash cow at this point.

Sooo are you saying that a lot of hunters in ON act like turkeys or just look like 'em?cou:

So does the revenue go towards turkey programs or into general coffers?

The program is run by our provincial "lobby group" The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and all the profit goes to OFAH. Yes it is a cash cow of sorts, but OFAH does a LOT of excellent work on behalf of shooters, hunters, anglers, trappers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. OFAH took a lead position a number of years ago in the fight against C-68 that went to the Supreme Court of Canada. (We lost, but that's irrelevant.)

There are folks here on CGN who are from Ontario and are anti-OFAH because of their perception that OFAH does not support handgun enthusiasts (for example). I do not think this is true, at all, but everybody can have their own opinions. Fighting C-68 was on behalf of ALL firearms owners, for example, but one should not expect an organization whose dues-paying members are primarily hunters and anglers to be foremost in the fight to retain handgunners' rights.

I am a life member of OFAH, and proud of it.

I just took a look at the NWTF records, and a 26 pound tom would be in the top 500 of all time in their record books, even if it was shot illegally and after hours by somebody with a Daisy Red Ryder.

Most Turkeys are estimated few are weighed,I estimated a hen I shot one fall to be about 29.6 lbs with a 17" beard I have no pictures or any one to back me up, but just saying I estimated!!
