Any point in owning rifles in both 7mm-08 and .308 Win?

Although the performance of these cartridges duplicate each other you might want to have one as a carbine for bush hunting and the other a rifle as for longer shots.

A possible solution to prevent taking the wrong ammo is to put the ammo in the case that you will use with each rifle.ie .308 ammo goes in the case that you use for the .308. This problem has existed for many years for folks that had a .270 and a .30-06.

Illiterate folks?
I don't know how people can put the wrong ammo in a gun...don't you look at the box, or the base of the shells everytime???
kinda seems like a basic thing...like check the gas guage before leaving on that 3 hour drive ya know?

In have both. They are configured for different purposes though. The 7mm-08 is a Ruger compact for bush hunting. The others fall more in the Black rifle or long range rifle category.

The ammo goes in the case that the rifle is in. For grab & go situatioins like at camp, I also use buttstock shell carriers

I have both

NAA.

It makes sense from a variety point of view. Mind you, having a spare of every caliber you really like also makes sense to me. Having 8 different .30 cals made sense when I applied myself a bit. You don't need to justify having a 7-08 and a 308. If you can have it, and you want it, you're GTG.

What would happen if you touched off a 7-08 in a .308 barrel?

Not a whole lot. Might sound funny with no back pressure and the accuracy would suffer a bit. :p Might be a little bit of blow-back around the case but not much with so little pressure. You would have a case stamped 7-08 that you could load as a 308.

Still not an error that anyone paying a little attention should run into.

The bottom of every one of my 7mm-08's says .308win on it.

But that said, I don't have a .308 to confuse them with.

I'm the same as you Orma, my 7-08 brass was all made from .308 and I only have the one. You don'y have to be and idiot to grab the wong brass, just be in a hurry. I've seen it happen.
