any reason not to reload 30-30?

A good caliber to start with. No need to burn up a ton of components looking for the ultimate accuracy load. Duplicating factory accuracy and performance will be easy. I've had good success with Win 748 and Hornady 170gr FP's. As has already been mentioned the 30-30 is an excellant cast bullet caliber should you decide to shoot even more for the same money.
Absolutely no reason not to reload for a 30-30. If the brass was all fired in your rifle, even better. If not, then a full length resize will "fix" it anyways.
For the price of new ammo, i don't know why anybody doesn't reload for almost any caliber ... I can understand some fo the guys buying dirt cheap surplus for their semi's - it's about even for reloading $, and you are saving a lot of time at the press, but other than that, reloading is a win/win to me. Cheaper and usuallly better quality control.

I've done it, it took a bit of playing around to get the crimp die set but once set reload away, just remember to use flat or round nose projectiles, unless you have a bolt action gun in 30/30
One of the great things about loading for the 30-30 is you don't have to limit yourself to those silly 170 gr. round-nose. If you do some research, you will find that many people have tested the pointed bullet in a tube mag thing and found that doing so is very safe (at least that's what I've been told). If that is so, then it opens up a world of different loads.

I wouldn't want to be the one holding or standing near if it did go off , it could make a bad day go worse IMHO

Putting spitzer bullets in that tube magazine brings with it the possibility of an unwanted explosion of a round in the magazine. [Despite what Papaclaude has heard]
Additionally, seldom will these rounds feed through the action, being too long to clear the magazine when the lever is dropped.
No spitzer with the exception of the Hornady Flex Tips have the crimping groove in the proper spot for a lever action 30-30.

Am loading using 748 or Varget using 150 & 170 gr. Hornady FN or 160 gr. Hornady Leverevolutions (POINTED BULLETS-by far the most accurate). Open sights, get them to within 1" using my Win '94 (pre-64).
As for savings, you get to shoot double the rounds at the minimum and IMO, more accurate loads than the retail stuff.
These Leverevolutions are specially developed for tube magazines and you can load to max.

As I pointed out earlier, I don't want to lead someone down the wrong path, and would strongly recommend that if someone is interested in doing so, they research it thoroughly, but I remember reading in a trusted magazine or book (Gun Digest, one of the reloading books or something similar) that they tried using a test barrel and a piece of tube mag under it, and they were never able to get the rounds in the tube mag to detonate. Again, I don't recommend anyone try this without confirming what I SEEM to remember, but you have to keep in mind that the 30-30 is not a hard-kicking rifle and the shells in the tube are cushioned by a spring. Personally, I would have no fear loading pointed soft point bullets in a 30-30. Not sure I'd go with hard-jacket hollow-points, though, but then I would have no need of such ammo in a 30-30. Again, this is my personal opinion, and I have done some crazy things in my life. However, I would not class this as one of them.
BTW, has anyone ever run into proof that this is dangerous? I did a quick search using Google and wasn't able to find anything that either proved or disproved it. A lot of warnings, but no actual cases.

As the original poster stated ,they were new to reloading,I would rather them start safe and get some experience under there belt before they start experimenting. lol I still stick to book guide lines and I have had my reloading stuff for over 10 years, I just want to shoot not be part of an experiment
