CSA vz58 in 556 is a great handy little shooter, you can bolt and glue all the ugly junk to it if you want
Alternately CZ 858 is cheap to shoot as well

RPAL = Choice
My "get an RPAL to play in a bigger sandbox" comment was simply meant to encourage the Op to acquire a greater choice by getting his RPAL.
That said, I do agree that being restricted to the range is a drag, and expensive compared to the freedom of a non-restricted tactical firearm.
If I could only afford one gun it would definitely be non-restricted. Probably an XCR, or if constrained to a $1000 limit it'd be a SU-16.

For under $1K your options have been stated. I would not limit myself to a certain price range, but rather look at all the guns that meet the rest of your criteria and if the one that is best for you is more expensive then just save up for it.
I put together my XCR from a mixture of EE goods and new items for considerable savings.
XCR-L
Purchased on the EE for $1900 with 200 rounds through it. Came with:

- 8 LAR-15 magazines
Purchased:
- hard case $35 (cdn tire)
- trigger lock $15 (bass pro)
- Buffer tube, castle nut and end plate $50 (EE)
- AR stock $65 (SFRC)
- 2x Mag couplers $20 (Canada Ammo)
Net Cost $2610
Cost if I got it all from scratch...probably around $5K
So pick the gun that suits your needs best and save and check the EE regularly.

The gas piston system I really like from a reliability standpoint, and the ability to take AR mags, including the 10 rounders, is great too. Add in that it can also take AR stocks, and it has a picatinny rail for mounting optics and it was perfect for me.

I ended up paying a bit more than I had to for the AR stock adapter and the compact forend because I ordered them both separate from the rifle, but you can buy them already installed on the gun for $1060 from one or two places. The Magpul CTR stock was an extra $120, the Magpul AFG was another $45.
I was going for the AR look and feel, so I removed the stock iron sights, but I had to figure out how to have something to back up my optics. The problem was there is no place to mount a front sight. I ordered a UTG 2 slot rail that clamps on the barrel for $12, and then I got a UTG .83" (Or medium) 2 slot riser for on top, for another $12. The rail is almost perfectly level with the rail on the receiver so everything lines up. I did have to grind off the center rail on the barrel clamp so the riser would sit in the middle, but it wasn't a big deal, took me all of 5 minutes with the dremel.

The irons are knock off Troy BUIS I got for $60. I wouldn't depend on them for any rough work, but I couldn't justify (or afford) $300 on a set of real Troys after I got the EOTech. For light use they should work fine, but they are in no way precision sights. You could use any picatinny mounted iron sights that you wanted if you meant to stick with them for regular use.
So all things included (taxes, ect) it was around $1500. Of course the rifle is perfectly functional without any extra stuff, so you have the option of just adding stuff when you have the money to spare, which is what I did.

Yea the FS2000 is a topic on its own, as is finding one... which brings me to my next point... can anyone point me in the direction of a non restricted fs2000? I would be majorly indebted to you hahah. I know questar use to have them but they only have the restricted varient now. I guess Hi Desert Dog doesn't like doing such small barrel runs. So sad.

I see the appeal to want to put a NEA lower on a Black Special it adds better mag and stock options, but if I am going to buy a black special it is cause I like the way it looks stock. Just my option. I also think the FS2000 is a beautiful design as well so it might just be me.

All I can say is WTF? That is the most useless POS I've ever seen lol, and it doesn't even look cool. At least most places that bolt as much crap as they can on a gun don't put an ACOG in front of an EOTech like they complement each other......and they don't do it on a 9mm.
