Any thoughts on the Henry lever rifles?

Thanks for the info Sun.

Can you provide the contact info for Henry? I'm interested in following in your footsteps.

It did not occur to me that I might be able to get metal parts from Henry.....

I think I'll be very happy with the rifle if I can get rid of the plastic as it is a pleasure to carry and shoot.

I found Henrys' customer service great. Rumour has it that often times Tony or Louis Imperato [president and chairman of the company respectively] will take your call personally.
Awful refreshing not to have to deal with one of Remington-Cerberus' reps.

I scored a Golden Boy from the EE and I love mine. Super slick action, accurate and damn good looking! Just need to get the brass barrel band to complete the rifle.

(E)

I have that same .22. H001 Lever. The action is slicker than snot on a doorknob, & with a scope, it shoots GREAT. BUT, . . . . .The cheapo plastic front sight is terrible. No way can You shoot a good group, when the front sight looks 1/4" wide ! I bought a Tang mount Peep Sight, & am going to adapt a Gold Bead front sight hood & ramp from another older rifle. I prefer the open sights, if they are good ones.

A guy at the range today had a henry lever action (the basic model). I had a few cracks with it and it had a sweet smooth action, nice trigger, and accurate too. I even liked the iron sights. I was impressed. If it could "take down" I would have offered to buy it from him :)

I agree.

I have the Henry lever in 22LR.

I was extremely p***ed off when I noticed the plastic barrel band and front sight. Really ruins a nice looking little rifle, and it's not mentioned in the description of the gun. Pretty sleazy I think.

After disassembly I wonder if durability will be an issue with these guns. There are some cheap-ass looking pot metal parts in there.

That being said, it's nice to shoot and has a smooth action. The wood looks nice too and the balance and heft are pleasant. If it didn't have the plastic I'd be pretty happy with it.
I have one as well and noticed the POI wandered some.
Like Anfoman76, I emailed Henry, complimented them on their rifle and explained the problem.
The president (Anthony) emailed back and then sent a metal front sight/barrel band in the mail free.
Outstanding customer service! KD

I own the rifle in standard .22 version. I find that it has excellent ergonomics and is great for instinctive shooting. Also very quick for follow up shots. Own many rifles and is still one of my favourites.

Just got back from the range with my new Golden Boy .22lr. It has the smoothest lever action I have ever fired. It is not bad for accuracy. I need to shot in the barrel some more and get a better feel for the sights.

These days it seems there is not much choice for a .22 LR lever under 500.

I am very happy with my new gun.

bulls - eye

that gun is really nice, went ot a few shops to order one like yours but all they had was the next engraved model.

do you know where the model you have is still available, and which model was it,

just so so so nice

Jeff

I have a 22, a 22 Mag and a 17HMR.
Love them all.
Smooth action, go "bang" everytime and more accurate than I am capable of using. Everyone that I let shoot them loves them.
After plinking with the 22, the 17HMR Golden Boy sure feels heavy tho'. :)
Having a hard time accepting having a scope on the 17HMR, levers just don't look right scoped but I can't see 100 yard target without. :(
Used the 22 to introduce my wife's handicapped young cousin to shooting. Because he has a "weak" arm, a light weight lever action fit him best. Kid's eyes lit up like headlights after shooting it.

I got mine in February from Ellwood Epps. What engraved model are you finding?

So many Henry boys in this older post, but it made me pick one (H001 18") up from Whls Sprts. What a slick trigger and smooth action. Can shoot this puppy all day at 50 mtrs. and keep a tight group with bulk ammo. One can get use to the open sights and achieve pretty fast target acquisition. I hold this thread responsible for successfully manipulating the urge to spend my meager funds on another "necessary" addition to the armory. Thanks a lot guys!!!!!

I'm late to this party but I like my H001 basic model that I'm likely going to sell it to one of my buddy's that's looking for a .22 lever and move up to either the Frontier model or all the way to a Golden Boy.

I'm leaning towards a GB and then fit it with a Lyman tang mounted peep sight to help out the old eyeballs.

Henry makes nice guns!

If your interested in a big boy deluxe have a look at the thread in my sig. Not 22lr but it is a Henry.

You beat me to it! I was just about to post how I'm hoping to have the winning ticket.

Btw, the next raffle should be for a .357 revolver to compliment the rifle.

I've posted a couple of times before in this thread.

I mentioned that I was displeased with the plastic parts but that I liked it other than that (talking about the 001 base model here)

I've since emailed the company and requested info on how to purchase metal replacements for the plastic parts. My email was polite and friendly yet I recieved no reply at all. Maybe the president of the company had email problems that day...

I've had a love-hate thing going with this rifle right from the start and now I both love it more and hate it more.

It's very accurate and a great shooter, I can really hit with it.

The other day after shooting it a bunch I noticed that a fleck of paint about the half the size of a small primer has peeled off of the receiver near the ejection port, with another smaller fleck nearby. This after nothing but very gentle use. This isn't from a scratch or a ding, it simply peeled off, apparantly from firing it....

The platform is great but Henry has cheaped out on it a little too much. I'd love to have one of these rifles made of steel and wood - no mystery metal, no paint, no plastic.

I would pay more for that.

I'd also love to see a .22 lever gun with a loading port, but that's another story.

When I went to the store to pick up the Henry, had exactly the same observation from the quality standpoint. However, from the pricing and accuracy reputation posted by CGN owners, this purchase was destined. Nevertheless, TT has a good point and at the time was considering paying $90 more to get the Henry Frontier (octagon barrel, better sights etc....). No stock in store and ended up with the entry level model (H001).
Now that its owned, whatever appearance defects existed are now non-issues, superceded by its perfomance in accuracy, smoothness and reliability. Plan to fire 000's of rounds. If the plastic front sight ever melts will put a scope to continue the fun!!!!!!
Average 30/yr. trips to the range (minimum). Assuming depreciation at $5/trip it would take me about 2 years to fully depreciate the Henry. Small price to pay for tons of shooting pleasure!!!!!!

Talk about resurrecting a thread from the dead!
Two-Tone, just call Henry directly. Call them this afternoon and I guarantee you will have your new front sight in the mail today and it should cost less than 20$ to your door.

As for the finish on your particular rifle it looks to me by your photos that the rifle has seen alot of use. I just sold a lightly-used Henry lever that had nowhere near the fine scratches your receiver shows.
Were you wiping it down lots with a cleaning solvent etc.?
You do realize these are 300$ dollar rifles, right? ;)
