Anybody else got a VZ-specific chest rig?

I've got some TAPCO nylon gear that I bought half-price off Marstar for 12 bucks. Holds 3 mags and not much else. It's pretty thick and I like it a lot.

Just curious, in a SHTF scenario (God forbid), how many mags would you want to carry on you anyway? What do you think of mag(s) on a drop leg rig? Inefficient? Too heavy?

I'm leaning towards 2 on rifle to start (with coupler), 6 in my chest rig, 1 on belt...of course I'm just dreaming and have no idea how much this would actually weigh...

Okay back to my mirror....:D

Mambo:

Im not one of thos "High-speed-Low-Drag" guys that have Seen real combat in Afgahnistan, As such, I do not run a rig that takes either soft or hard plate, tho I am condisering running some kind of light helmet, as I am so dam uncoordinated and invearably hit my head on some thing, especially getting in and out of a vehicle. :D:D

So with the above in mind, this is just my opinion so take it for what its worth.

I just had a custom rig configured on a Two Piece Mav with improved/enhance shoulder straps. I talked alot with the guys building this rig for me, and what we came up with this config

2 double mag pouches for the carbine for a total of 4
4 magnetic pistol mag puches
1 catach all medical/admin pouch
1 Cammel back resivoir
Edit: Forgot to add the good vest mounted dump pouch with retention

I have left my belt a little open, but the only item it supports right now, is my Drop leg holster for my G23 9mm conversion.

This is just the initial config and I am sure there will be some refinement but I think its a pretty solid start.

Edit: I really like your comment about the mag on the carbine being coupled, and may give that a try

I'm running the same Plate carrier as Blackthorne as above, with the cummerbund addition and soft & hard innards.. The exception is that I'm running a couple quad HSGI Shingles from Darren at One Shot. They each hold 4 AK mags (staggered overlapping), open top with bungee retention. 2 Pouches fit easily across my chest for 8 mags at hand. Straddling one shingle is a triple pistol mag pouch from Voodoo.

Very slick setup, and very fast.

Only 4 mags with 5 rounds each?! surely now, wouldn't you want to have like 50 mags if it came to a SHTF scenario?

Troll post ^^

I have never had a good experience with drop leg stuff... definatly not ammo... its a pain on the leg, can twist your belt pretty bad, puts extra weight on your hips, and is a pain to get at when in kneeling or prone (let alone in a vehicle)

I would stick with the Neit Arms setup or AbH's for sure... my only addition would be a Riggers belt with 1x mag pouch, dump pouch, and lanyard with 180 degree attachment point... but thats just cause im so tacticool :D

EDIT: the only thing I run drop leg is a holster

Here is a pic of the rig I run for the VZ and now for AR mags, as previously stated its the Eagle AK rig.

I've added a hydration pack to the back that can be removed with simple clips, typically there is a C9 pouch on the far left that carries first aid stuff or a secondary pouch. Keep in mind I'm a lefty so most of you would set it up the opposite.

On the far right I have my primary pouch that is just a simple M14/FAL pouch with some Kydex inserts sewn in that hold VZ mags firmly, I feed that pouch from the 3 chest pouches or work right to left depending on what I'm doing (generally with 5 round mags I'm just working my way across). Behind the primary pouch is the dump pouch. Finally the far left pouch carries the mags positioned for support hand drills.

Here is the same setup with a couple P-Mags to show that they work quite well in the AK setup. In fact with the flaps open the mags stay in place nicely.

When shooters first get a rig the tendency is to either get something cheap (like the chinese surplus rigs) or get something that is way to complicated for what they need to do. The nice thing about the Eagle AK rig in that regard is it offers simple quality but is also somewhat expandable. There is room to add things as needed. If you want to run plates all the time then a molle carrier is obviously the way to go. If you want to run plates but not all the time then I would suggest the Eagle rig again because you can run a low-pro carrier under the rig.

Drop leg is kinda frustrating unless your role is one that allows for it. More often then not it just gets in the way. My personal preference is to have as much stuff at waist height and easy to get at as possible. KISS is the name of the game, but when it comes to gear everyone has their own favorite setup.

AbH,

That does sound very well thought out and a darn good start...I've wondered how comfortable the X-Harness is for the TT Mav. How does your rig feel when on? Thanks for reminding me too about hydration!

Cool! That's a whole lotta mags. How's the bungee retention on those pouches work with the curve of the VZ mag?

Mr. Mambo:

Well let me put it this way...............

You have to remmber I am a die hard AR guy, so I had an AR rig made up on the two peice mav first (in tan of course :D ). Now I have not really had that much time with this rig, but I did use it in an improptue 1 day course Carbine course using a 16.1" carbine I had just built for myself, and I must say I was very impressed with it, and it was a pleasure to wear.

I was so pleased, that I had a second one built (in Ranger green so I can tell them apart) for the VZ-58 or should the oportunity allow, and AR-10.

Will snap some pictures if you like. Just remember Quality gear is not inepensive, but it is a good value, and better than spending less money TWICE!!

Just my 2 cents

Excellent.. each pouch has a horizontal bungee as well, so when it's go time you can remove all your upper straps to get the mags out fast.

The one negative to some with shingles is that the mags come out real nice, but are a pain to replace in the heat of things. I run a dump pouch when training, and when competing I drop them completely. Not an issue for me.

The SD card in my camera went tits up, I'll post a pic once I get it recovered.

Haha tacticool makes sense. Do drop leg holsters also flop around say if you're in full sprint even with straps tight? I could understand ammo flopping around cuz it would be heavier?

I hear this a lot about having a primary pouch...you can tell I don't have any "tactical" (buzzword! ding ding ding!) training haha...what's the main idea behind this? Is not working from your chest rig like you said from whatever direction not as efficient? You mentioned you 'feed' this primary from your other pouches...so basically whenever you have a moment to spare you're doing a transfer? I can understand then if you have to shoot say from prone and reload, you always have a super accessible pouch to grab from, correct?

I have never has an issue with my holster flopping even in full sprint, but thats is larhely because of the holster. Some do and some dont... the issued CF holster does, but if you get one with good tension straps and grip you should be fine

Looks like you could get one or two in there. But I have big issues with a) fixed position vests, b) crossdraw holsters, and c) velcro mag pouches (thats personal preference), and finally those vests tend to have some serious fitting issues...

Plus... you really do get what you pay for
