Anybody out there have a custom or semi-custom 600/660 rem? If so lets see some pics with details about the build. I have an action and I'm thinking of building a lightweight mountain rifle.

Don't get me wrong, they're great little guns. Mine shoots 1" with factory ammo.
I have a stock 600 .308 wouldn,t part with it for the world.

custom 350
I had a custom 350 rem mag built on the 660. I put a 20" pac-nor barrel. black mcmillian stock and had the whole thing powder coated cast iron. I put open sights on it. I then bought leupold QR rings and bases. so I can take the scope off easy and use the open sights if needed. I then topped it off with a leupold VX III 2.5x8. I currently shoot 200gr TSX's at 2850fps into 1/2 groups. I am very happy with my build.

Thats the stuff I want to see. Awesome! What a rifle. I see you must have had another hole tapped on the rear of the reciever. That is one hell of a moose/bear gun. Classy build.

Custom 600 in 204 Ruger. Started life as a 222 Remington. It sits in a Robertson Composite stock, internal mag, remington tactical bolt knob, remington 700 trigger and safety with the 600 trigger shoe to fit the trigger guard, 26" Adams & Bennet tube, finishes at .850 muzzle diameter and a 1 piece rail. On top of that is a Nikon 3-12 Monarch BDC scope. Metal is finished in flat gray KG GUNKOTE.
I have one that is now a 22/250 with a VXIII 6.5-20 scope, it is being taken out of the factory stock and put into a Richards Microfit laminate varmint stock. It's almost there, still a fair bit of sanding to go on the new stock before it is finished. When it is done I will try to get a picture up.
Have a Mohawk 600 .308 in process of being customized so no pics yet.
- trigger lightened to 2 3/4 lbs
- all metal painted flat OD Green
- HT Specialties stock flat OD Green/R3 recoil pad
- Gre-Tan bolt shroud and fluted firing pin
- EGW scope rail
- rear sight replaced from original plastic base to a metal version
- front and rear sights swapped out to tritium
- Coquille Valley Machine Works aluminum trigger guard

Started life as a 308 and now it's a 243. All thats left of it is the action.
600 action, jeweled bolt, the original dogleged handle was cut off and replaced with a brushed steel one, 700 heavy varmint wieght barrel, laminate stock w/full bedding and a DYI paint job. It's a real laser....
I love this rifle

The 600 is a decent basis for a custom rifle of the lightweight persuasion but there are a couple of features which hurt it a bit.
The first is the bolt handle. Not to put too fine a point on it; it's ugly! The second and related feature is the forward location of the trigger lever. Now, both of these features exist for a reason. The whole point of the Remington 600 was to make a short, compact rifle for scabbard use (just what part the nylon rib played in this, I can't say!). To this end the receiver was made a bit shorter than the 700 by shortening the receiver bridge and tang. This meant the whole barreled action could be moved back in the stock. To do this meant the trigger had to be moved to the front of the housing. It also meant the bolt handle had to be doglegged forward so it wouldn't bite the shooter's knuckle so badly when the rifle recoiled.
The last 600 I built was a very light 6BR. I replaced the bolt handle and relocated the trigger. The 700 trigger position was too far to the rear and the 600 too far forward so I made one which split the difference and fit the ADL trigger guard well. I liked the result just fine.
I would build myself a rifle on a 600 but think a Model 7 is a better choice. Regards, Bill.

Looks like all you need to do now is replace that Plastic trigger guard.
Ya, I saw the post on the EE, just never got around to getting a machined one. I will soon though!
I have one I built into a scout rifle, another that I rebarreled to 284, another I rebarreled to 7mm-08 Ackley, and still have one laying around in 308. Oh, and a switch barrel XP100, which is the same gun in single shot solid bottom persuasion. - dan

My 660 started out as a .308, then a 7mm-08. Since I have a preference for tossing large chunks of lead, I turned it into a .416x2". Why? Nobody else I know has one. The rifle is finished except for barrel blueing however I have yet to fire it as my custom dies are not yet finished. I have an idea what it will be like to shoot as a friend has a .458x2" on a 600 Mohawk action. Since it has been fitted with a muzzle brake it is quite pleasant to shoot. With a #5 contour barrel cut to 23" and weighing about 8lb., the .416 should be quite manageable, even without a brake. This photobucket thing baffles me so if anyone wants a pic, send me your email address and I'll be happy to send one.
