I have about 5000 of the old AA's also and about 8000 of the various Remington's trap hulls.
Boy those Gold Remington hulls sure look nice.
The old AA's have always had a problem on the first load with cracking of the crimp and abut 10% or more seem to be junk. After that they will go 5 or more.
We do and have done a lot of patterning and if the Super Targets were a problem they would not be used.
I do not have any of the big name shotguns just the poor man trap guns 870CT, 870 Competition, BT99, and about 6 other 870's in various configurations along with an 1100 or two.
We are a fairly active club with many different shotguns used by the members so have seen just about all types and makes.
We have four trap Fields and a Skeet field going since the early 70's I am the current manager of this at the present time.
Our ATA shoot shoot is always in the second week of September and has a fun shoot under the lights for a "Hooty Owl bragging rights" added to this along with a trophy and Champions shooter jacket.
3macs1 it sounds like we are about the same age so therefore have each formed out own
opinions and neither one of us will likely change.
I also do no high performance shot shell loading so therefore as stated no high pressures are involved. Now rifle is a different story.
Have a great and safe trap season and if my eyes allow it hope to see many of you on the trap line.
Don
Not a fancy gun guy either Don. Was at one time when I shot like a robot but know better now.
Love the 870's and have a load of them.
Since we are talking the old AA compression formed hulls you have to go back further than the ones I think you are talking about.
The ones you want to save have the solid copper primer, have a ring on the outside of the brass and have a WW on the bottom, and no shine on the red plastic. They will not spilt as you mention and will go 8-10 reloads with no problem.
Winchester actaully changed the plastic composition I cannot remember the year but those are the ones that yes split and have problems. Those are a shiny red in color and have a primer with a copper center but a silver ring around it. Still compression formed but not the ones I stash.
Here is a pic of two of each side by side, plus a pic actually showing the color diff and the cracks actually starting on the one on the left.
Old I am not as old as some think but was shooting in the late 60's as a small boy with my dad who was a big time trap and skeet shooter.
Was probally 7 or 8 pulling the mec handles for him .
Lets just say I still have a couple 100 of the red 20ga winchesters so I am old I guess.
Today I shoot a 870 28ga pump for everything trap included. Gun down and have a ball.
Take care
