Anyone’s pull a moose tag or!!

I just wrote and sent off a long letter to the new Minister of Natural Resources, Jeff Yurek, advocating scrapping the current system and adopting a point system. With the new management and attitudes at Queen's Park, maybe we can get things done if enough of us are calling for change. If you're not happy with the current system, start writing letters. I plan on being the squeaky wheel.

Just a quick question, sorry to derail the thread. Just wondering how much meat you could expect from your average cow moose if you do your part correctly and have a good butcher?

Average yearling cow, average three year old cow, average dry 8 year old cow? $64 question On the hoof weight X .4 for meat in the freezer might give you an indication.

About a dozen of us group 1 members in Ont WMU 49 pulled calf tags only again this year - has been about 4-5 years since we got the last cow tag, and must be 10 since a bull tag.

I believe there were less than 50 cow/bull tags for about 4000 hunters according to the MNR - they cut the number of tags in half two years ago if memory serves.

Not a fan of the calf hunt either - they have a hard enough time surviving with the predator problem (wolves). One of the neighboring camps several miles away is occupied year round and he told us he had shot multiple wolves over the winter and it was common to have several packs howling around his lake at night. He also said there had been rumors of closing 49 for a bit to help get the number of moose up, but so far no action has been taken.

Guess we'll just do more fishin' and 4 wheelin'.

we had great luck 3 bull tags for 5 guys and a cow tag from the surplus draw just in case. we hunt wmu 1c have had great success! leaving next tuesday to head up can't wait!!

Drew a cow tag for 18A. Surprise, because only two group 1 hunters. They usually give out more bull tags than cow tags, but more people apply for bulls so odds are better to draw a cow. Cows are better eating unless you get a young bull. I agree, I would prefer to apply for bulls and leave cows to produce calves, but the system dictates otherwise. Some areas they give out more cow tags because they think there is a shortage of bulls. The system is seriously flawed in so many ways, but upper echelon MNR have their career invested in it so it can't be wrong. One big problem in my opinion is the forestry companies spraying to selectively kill the young deciduous growth that moose love. Check a clear-cut that has been moose pasture a year or two after spray and there will be no fresh moose sign.

any luck in 18A?
we came back last week, empty handed, seen some tracks but not much, and that’s about it
