Anyone handloading for the M14?

If you ever have the chance to get some LC 7.62x51 cases, those are the best for M1A/14s. Reliable and Wanstalls both managed to get some Federal XM80 ammo in, but sold out within days. But I managed to get two crates :)

Like i said before.
I'm not at all interested in brass that i cant readily get later in time , Reasoning is if i do somehow find a load and everything is working perfectly i want to without a problem be able to reliably repeat that load..

Not sure there is such a thing as 7.62 X 51 brass that will always be available. Sometimes a guy is thrilled to find 200 rounds to work with. I think if you check case volumes your data should remain relevant. I'm sure case prep is a bigger factor than brand name. Volumes being equal that is. I wouldn't worry about Bench rest reloading techniques for a Norinco with a shim and spring guide. They seem to shoot MOA with copper washed ammo anyway.

I'm loading 44.5 gr of WW 748 and Prvi Partizan 150 gr FMJ bullets in IVI and DA brass.
Works OK in my 2 Norks (18.5" & 22" barrels) 2730 fps from the 22" barrel

Going to be in the city tomorrow picking up a scope , Wondering if i should get some IMR 4895 while i'm in there if i can even find any. Or just use the 2 lb's of IMR 4064 i have already and/or maybe even pick up another lb or two of that instead..

MILSURP 7.62 brass isn't available like it once was. The other day I was in Cabelas at Post Falls, ID where I saw a package of 250 pcs of mixed military brass (IVI and LC) polished, pockets swaged, trimmed and FL resized selling for $80 USD.

My understanding here is that if it is MilSurp it is probably (very likely) machine gun brass and should be avoided because of the high cyclic rate and the brass is stretched big time and is no bargain. Anyone care to speak to this? Of course U could also end up with regular old M14 or M305 brass from range re-qual. However be that as it may most military units are no longer issuing the 308 for general use but the 7.62X51 machine gun is still in wide use by all the armed forces in the US. I could be wrong here, but I do not think I would buy surp brass. Buy new Winchester civilian brass and watch case stretching at the web. Toss after 2 or 4 re loadings to be safe.

Wilson case gauge Is a quick check. I purchased 1000 IVI Nato cross marked once fired cases on thee ee and my RCBS head space gauge has them between 1.632-1.634". Not sure what they were fired from but the brass has a good reputation. The once fired 6.5x55 Privi cases I purchase all measured at minimum oal after full length sizing so hard brass seems to stand up better.

Measured the Headspace of my PRVI 308/7.62x51 brass tonight which i received from mystic precision.
Measured with the Gauge above.

Out of bag all measured 1.628" which is about perfect. so now just going to make sure they are all trimmed to the right length and start priming em up.
then loading some rounds.

Hopefully we will get some near 0*C weather here soon in AB and I can get out there and do some testing.

Got a new lead sled from my family for Xmas so that should be helpful :p..

update.

Did up rounds from 43 grn up to 46 grn in 0.2 grn increments , You guys weren't kidding about loosing powder capacity.
Im not sure i can fit much more than 46 grns in that brass unless i compress it a bit. then again i haven't worked with 308 + 4064 in probably 5-6 years it may just take more space than i remembered and likely more than varget does of the same weight.

Well hopefully those yield some results. it all looks pretty good anyhow.

Just waiting for the rail now. and then sight it in and shoot.

Just want to confirm consensus.

I would like to do some loading for Norc M305, to be a 100 - 300 yard scoped gong plinker.

After 10 months of waiting for parts and in the end doing all that was needed myself, rifle runs great now but accuracy is horrible.
Passes all Hungry tests.

In Sage ebr stock
new fulton Gen2 bolt, lapped in . headspaces to 1.632
Sadlac spring and guide
no work to trigger, passes test in stock.

I load for my rem 700 5r -168 berger VLD, 168 HB VLD touching lands. Varget + CCI br2

Would like to get some accuracy out of this Norinco. the rifling is 1-12, confirmed

Start point consensus:
41 gr IMR4895
CCI BR2 primers - set deep below brass
155 or 168s?
OAL not critcal, magazine fed.
Keep brass below max coal
FL size for every reload

Thank-you for your comments in advance
and apologies Leonard, dont mean to rip off your thread, just didnt want to ask these kind fellas the same thing twice.
