Anyone have a Brno ZKK-601 in .223 ???

Having issues with my camera today - I'll get the pics up tommorrow.
Mine was bought new, in Lloydminster, Alberta - about 1990 I think. It, like yours, has 223 on the mag follower. Factory barrel is long gone, I rebarreled it about 1993 (I think)
 
Just came across this thread...I purchased several ZKK's from Pragotrade. Not sure about BRNOman's assertions but Canadian Tire did list and sell (I saw numerous in the CT store in Mississauga) .223 Rem ZKK's. They were pretty cheap then I believe ($399 I think)....Also he (BRNOman) says that the O/U Safari rifle was for display only.. not true...a friend purchased one in 375 H&H (with sidelocks similar to their ZP shotgun) and I saw another at "Nick's" sporting goods on Yonge Street in Toronto for sale years ago as well. I still have one of their old catalogues somewhere as well. ZKK were/are very good rifles and very accurate - some of them had extraordinary wood as well once you removed the cheap varnish....fwiw

Hey AP, great Info, thx! It seems the layers seem to be unfolding on these. As of now I have been only able to confirm factory ones in Canada (mainly ALTA it seems) a very few so far from OZ, and NONE in the US..besides mine, which came by way of ALTA, CN. While it seems they were available as you say at CT ect...it seems it was limitedly sold and for a very short time.

Oh yeah...and the OU's he was saying for those specific weapons/items. Like you I had heard that they had been made available on a limited basis...but I have yet to see one personally yet. I would love to have a copy of that old Brno catalog...how many pages? Chance of a scan?

DANG! Dmay, that is one purrrrrdy rifle. While my wood is in great shape it is rather plain...Your wood beats mine hands down...I am guessing yours is a LUX. It is very similiar to my ZKK-600 .270. Is that the orgiinal finish on that wood?
 
Yeah - wood has never been touched, other than the forearm hogged out to fit heavier barrel.Hard to see in these pics, but the wood at the top of the barrel channel is a knife-edge. Have to be very particular handling it to avoid damage. Of course, if I had it to do over, I would likely come up with different rebarrel options, or left original, but at the time, was building a semi-custom varminter on a budget.
To its credit- has many thousands of gopher kills, barrel was set back once, probly due to rebarrel in another season or two. Maybe a little less shiny this time???:p
 
I have to tell you that yours is the ONLY one I have seen as a LUX...I guess that really isn't saying much though, as I haven't been able to find that many to see. I'll put this way, it is the only LUX I have even heard of in .223.

I hear you on your build...hind sight eh! Bottom line is though that you have had many of great experiences with it and it still a phenomenal rifle. Not saying it looks bad or anything, cause it doesn't...but on the shiny thing for next time...I think I agree with you as it kind doesn't match it's classic look and times are different. Who knows though, being in Canada you might actually come across another one. Greater odds than me, as I currently live in Washington. Good luck and take care!
 
I am looking at my Pragotrade BRNO catalogue of 20 pages. Covers shotguns ZP SxS, CZ O/U (and combo) BRNO Super (O/U shotguns and combo's with sidelocks) and BRNO Super Express (O/U rifles sidelocks 7x65r, 9.3x74r, 375H&H, 458 W Mag.) also ZH O/U shotguns and combos.

The ZKK 600, 601, 602 is also listed. FWIW the ZKK 601 is listed as 243W and .308W only....before getting too excited I should point out the ZKK 602 is listed as only available in 375 H&H and 458W Mag - this is partially true - I have a ZKK 602 in 375H&H but I also have a ZKK 602 in 8x68s (which they do not list!) Believe me when I say they did sell 223Rem through Canadian Tire (at least). Incidentally the Fox is listed as available in 222Rm annd 22 Hornet only - there you go again as I believe others have seen the Fox in 223 (personally I haven't) They also show the ZKM 452 and 581 (but not the neat 22 magnum auto loader takedown).

Slavia air rifles and pistols as well as Drulov model 70 and 75 free pistols (very nice and were pretty cheap at the time). The CZ 75 and 70 gets a page as do Carl Zeiss Jena scopes with the nifty rail mount designed for the BRNO (I bought three or four at the time) scopes are ZF 4s, ZF 6S, and the VZF 1.5-6x, 39 (never saw the variable) but bought a couple of the 4x's for around $200 plus tax I recall. They have detachable yellow filters a camel hair brush, leather caps on one and a nifty rubber eyecup a la Spetsnaz .

The last pages are dedicate to Sellier and Bellot ammo...apparently this catalogue was courtesy of Nicks Sporting Goods says the stamp - which is where I bought the 8x,68S I recall.

I will see about a scan although it is a little long -- 20 pages

Awesome! I hear you on the point of what is listed and what isn't...basically when it isn't listed, the only thing that means for sure, is that it is less common at best or didn't exist at worst. I guess it's is kind of like their serial #'s...even to those that were affiliated with Brno, they start and start and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to them.

As for the scans...for me personally, I am most interested in anything in the Brno Rifles, be it RF's or CF's. Thanks AP, I really appreciate your input and the effort!

The 602 was also chambered in 358 Norma Mag, 300 Win, 300 H&H, and there is a rumour that there was a short run of 404 J. The 8x68 is a fine cartridge; you can hunt most of the game on earth with it.

I have come across the fixed 4 and 6 power scopes, but not the variable.

The ZH combo guns are clubs IMO but Brno rifles are fantastic.

In the owner's manual that came with one of my BRNO's, the cartridge listings for the 601 are 308, 243, 222 Rem, and 222 Rem Mag but like you said, there are more chamberings out there and TOU's rifle is proof.

I remember when Cambodian Tire sold firearms. Does that make me old?:p

They definitely were available in 358 Norma Mag and 404 Jeffrey in the early 1970s. I thought many times about getting one, but had the 375 and also a Husqvarna in 358 Norma Mag, so figured I didn't need both.

What a dope! They were the same price as the 375, came with the neat little pop-up receiver sight, and were available. Could have had one in my mitts in two weeks! :rolleyes:

Now, of course, getting a 404 is a totally different story.

I am very frequently impressed with the BRNO wood...often it doesn't appear to fancy....until you remove the cheap factory varnish finish....then the wood can be spectacular. One day I will post pictures of a 308 BRNO I purchased simply for the wood....still in the box...
