Hi guys I've got a Rem 5R, but have put lots of money into it and so can't afford a coyote gun. I was looking into using sabots and loading a .22 cal projectile. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with sabots and would tell me how accurate they got them to shoot?

Thanks

There is no way you can get accuracy better than without sabots, and there may very well be quite bad accuracy with them. My advice is don't bother.

I shot .22 caliber bullets in sabots in 30-06 some years back. It was remington factory ammo and it shot reasonably well. IIRC i shot some inch size groups with it. At 4000 fps it basically turned your 30-06 into a 220 swift. Definitely accurate enough for coyotes.

But the drawback was that the regular ammo and the sabot .22 ammo did not have POI anywhere close to each other so major scope adjustments every time you switch back and forth between sabot and non sabot. If that's not a big deal then it could work for you. Google "sabot" and you'll find several websites.

I know where there is at least ONE box of Remington accelerators in 308! Lol, I gave away my last box of those as I found them to be quite useless.

If the 125gr. Noslers don't turn you on, (why, I dunno) you could always get Hornady .308" 110gr. V-MAX bullets and give them a try. Good accuracy and would be a great choice for Coyotes.

Sabots are a waste of time and an even better waste of money. Even if they were a good choice, finding them would be difficult at best.

found them in europe and the states. 40 dollars for 100 sabots and reloading die. 40 dollars gets me 500 sabots or something like that. I still think the 110 v-max will do a fair amount of damage to the fur. I'm trying to save the fur.

I'm trying to save the fur.

FMJ's and a careful shot, or spring for a rifle in a fur (more) friendly caliber.

Take a look at the Sevens 200, in .223, if you can find one. Get a set of rings, if they do not come with, swap the scope you already have, on to it.

The Remington Accelerators that I shot in a .308, lived up to the reported 6" at 100 yard group capabilities. Not over-useful. That, inna nutshell, is why they are not on the shelves these days.

But what the heck. Order in your sabots and work up some load, see if you can come up with something that works better.

That and it's hard to get any ballistic evidence from a bullet that never touches the bore, wasn't it tabled to make them illegal in Canada?

I can't possibly fathom where someone would believe accelerating a projectile to near 4,000 fps. would be a "fur friendly" endeavour.

Then you own the wrong rifle. If you don't like the answers, your best bet is to just load them up and try.

Later, you can get a more appropriate coyote rifle.

2bad42 it's a .22 cal and not .30 cal like the .308 and to rral22 I will load them and see what happens. If i get the accuracy i want keep them, if not, throw them out lol

Not that I ever heard, but then, I don't spend any time within earshot of the 'experts' behind the gun counter, if I can help it. I've heard that excuse for, among other things, not having Hollow Point ammo in stock, as well as Full Metal Jacket ammo (Wholesale in Edmonton North, go figure), so I would not be surprised if it started at a similar source.

At the speed those pills traveled, there was not any ballistic information to be got, from the disintegrated bullet, anyways.

They were a crappy product that went away by natural causes, to whit: they got tried, they didn't live up to the sales pitch, and they died a natural death.

I could see some of the anti's believing that they were all that it would have took to start anarchy rule, but they thought that about cartridge activated nail guns and a bunch of other stuff.

Ok, so if I understand what you want from "coyote rifle", you want either no exit wound, or a very small, clean exit wound, right?
so use your 5R with a nice tough 180 grain that would barely start to expand in a dog's chest, or pick yourself up a "pointing die" and use whatever HPBTs your rifle shoots best.
