I just recently picked this example up that I'm pretty happy about. It's a May 1917 produced M95 that was later converted to an M95-30 long rifle in 8x56R. Great shape. These are fairly uncommon as most of the M95's that were converted to 8x56R were shortened to stutzens (i.e. carbines).

Nice walnut stock at a time when lots of substitute standard woods were being used, so that's nice to see. It's a matching numbers gun, though the stock was re-numbered in service. Steyr manufacture with a nice bore. I have ammo on the way to make her bark again - perhaps for the first time in decades.

Bayonet also a recent addition from P&S Militaria, also of Steyr manufacture.

What M95 variants do others here have?

Mine is an M95 carbine in 8x56R. Made by Steyr.
I load my own ammo for it, before I purchased brass and bullets for it I fireformed some cases by shooting some 7.62x54R through it ( believe me, the Austrians used to do this sometimes with Russian captured ammo, but it gives a very impressive muzzle flash.), it does reform the case but leaves a very short neck.
Its a fascinating rifle, it has a place of honor besides my Ross M10 and k31, I don't like the very hard trigger pull, so I'm working on the sear mechanisme and hope to find a softer sear spring.
Once I have it back together I'll post a picture.

Sadly now gone, my first M95, a Budapest stamped gun. Not surprisingly to some I am sure, bought it from Century back in the day, with a bundle of ammo at .25$ per round. The sling, bayo, original style cleaning rod, frog and ammo pouch all came from Germany around 93/94. One of the ones I sometimes wonder why I sold it.

Gewehr 1895
Stutzen 1895
Karabiner 1895
Karabiner 1895 with Stutzen lug
Karabiner-Stutzen 1895
Stutzen-Karabiner 1895
And also you have Bulgarian contract, Austrian vs Hungarian made, etc., wait there is also Czech Brno made!
And then multiply this and some previous models by /30 modification.

By the way, if anyone has an excess of chargers for these, pm me, I would like to find 5 more in Canada. I have some but want to fill out my set of ammo pouches.

The last time surplus was sold, it included clips, so I’m hoping there are a bunch sitting in somebody’s drawer :).

Edit: thanks to a kind CGN member (you know who you are) who is selling me a few :)

As an aside, I'm reloading some of the 208gn PPU FMJBTs into virgin PPU cases to try out - perhaps this weekend.

I've been searching around the net looking for data, as the Lee data has a rep for being both aneamic (kinda like their 8x57 loads), and they don;t list a 205 or 208gn jacketed load.

I've got a few rolled and will be working up to 44gn of varget, CCI 34 primers. Some of the data I found on the usual reloading sites shows guys running these bullets at 46gn varget and getting around 2200 fps. I'm expecting I'll be a little slower and may be able to go up a grain or two after I test the load.

More to follow - trying to replicate WW2 surplus ammo, which was also 208gn FMJBT and ran around 2300fps (likely out of a carbine I suspect, as they are more numerous).

Should be interesting to see where these shoot given the 300yd sights.

Anyone else worked up loads for 8x56R yet that aren't based on neutered lee data?

European 8x57 loads work well. Don’t like the watered down North American loads. They rechambered them to 8x57 so they aren’t a weak action. I had a few jacketed bullets I loaded up with IMR 4350. The carbines kick like a pissed off mule,so decided to go back to lead bullets. 20.6 grs of Alliant 2400 and Lee 205 gr cast makes for more pleasant shooting. That load actually lines up with the sights at 100m. The 4350 load was 10”s over at 100 m.

Looked back through some old records I still have the 8x56 Carbine I reloaded for last in 2012. Lee cast bullets of around 200grs. Sized in a Lee push through sizer die which had been expanded to size at 330. Gas check seated at the same time (8mm) then pan lubed.. If memory serves me correctly relatively light recoil, good accuracy and shot to were sights were set at lowest setting. Almost forgot I still own the thing. Kind of a neat , fun cast bullet shooter (as are most mid caliber military rifle/carbines)

CGN user diopter has posted this data in this thread https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...licher-hungarian-loads.1251525/#post-11496513 along with a bunch more loads

I got a M95M Budapest that’s converted to 7.92 x 57mm (8mm Mauser). It’s kind of an odd one since it still has an extractor that’s intact.
I had one of those years ago that looked great but was totally mismatched numbers and another CGN member on here that I know bought a couple functioning spotters as spares for his example.

The modified m95m extractors aren’t that weak, but they do not ride over a rim. You have to feed from the mag or the extractor breaks. Many people ruined those rifles learning that lesson.

Got pics of yours?

Well I loaded up 20 rds with 44gn varget. Will chrono and test those, but if diopter got up to 49gn and got surplus-like velocities, that gives confidence I can go higher if needed.

44 grn Definitely feels safe hopefully gives ya 2000fps ish.
Same post had a load of 47 grains of IMR-3031 at a impressive 2,316 fps thinking I might try that load probably some impressive fireballs
The Short m95's are just such fun little guns.
I see PPU says their loaded ammo has a muzzle velocity of 2300 fps anyone crono it before ?.

The Lee Data IS their 8mm Mauser data.

You'll need to be sub 2000fps to shoot to the sights if that matters to you. Surplus velocity is 2380 in the shorter barrel.

Not the best pics but here is my current M95 carbine version. Looks like post WW1 assembly I believe but I am far from an authority by any means on these. I originally owned both a M95 rifle and carbine back in the late 70's but foolishly sold them off along with 100's of rounds of ammo.20250115_141648.jpg20250115_141508.jpg20250115_141426.jpg20250115_141226.jpg20250115_143939.jpg

Looks like yours was assembled in Austria originally as a carbine from left over parts in 1919, later given to Bulgaria likely in ww2. Either the Austrians or Bulgarians re-reamed the chamber to 8x56R.

Nice rifle. The 1919 dated ones are uncommon, and apart from the caliber conversion, the rifle does not look refurbished. The bolt may have been replaced before the Bulgarians numbered it, impossible to know for certain.

Thanks for your information, good to know that. I purchased this one from Tradex a number of years ago along with a bayonet which got misplaced here somewhere. This is a fun gun to shoot but Ive only put maybe 40-50 rounds through it up to now. Got lots of PPU brass and bullets for it but just haven't gotten around to doing much loading for it. Does have a nice satisfying bark to it, especially in the evening.
