Howdy Guys,

I have a LH Ruger M77 from around 90-91 (bought used). I was loading it one day when I realised that the control round feeding that it was supposed to do was just pussh feeding and the extractor was working over the case head once it was mostly chambered. I looked at the bolt and noticed the the half ring of steel at the bolt face that I thought should be on the top while feeind was actually on the bottom; this was the reason that it did not control round feed.

I was hoping someone here had a new LH Ruger M77 that they could look at the bolt face for me and tell me which side (top or bottom) the halg steel ring on the bolt face is on when feeding; or if ther is any at all.

A question for the gunsmiths, or anyone who has ahd this issue; can this ring be cut into to allow it to pick it up like a Mauser without cause any major problems (ejection, etc)?

The MKII is supposed to be a CRF action, at least that is waht the webiste says. I have seen photos on the net of the new right hand bolt faces, they look different than the the bolt face on mine. The steel lip looks to be about 1/3 the thickness of what mine is, and it is on the top edge instead of the bottom.

Your gun may be older than you think. It sounds like you have the original m77, not the MKII. Is it a tang safety?

Also, there may have been a transition period early on when they switched to the MKII that still used the push feed.

It is marked MKII on the action and the year of manufacture is 1994 from the website; somebody told me earlier that it was made in 91, but I guess they were wrong.

It is set up very similar to the Swede Mauser I have downstairs, it just looks like it was put together upside down.

Does anyone else own a left handed M77 MKII that can give me an idea what theirs looks like, or anyone who knows if it can be modified?

Corey,

Not exactly sure what you are looking for so here are some pictures of my left hand bolt. If you need a different angle let me know.

I have had 2 different Ruger 77 MKII's none of which are left hand though... But they all look like 99trix's Ruger I can take picture as well of them if you need but they are CRF rifle both have been from 2005 or newer.

99trix, thank you very much; that is exactly waht I was looking for. The bolt face on mine looks exactly like yours in the first photo, except there is a rim the depth of the lock where your thumb is that goes all the way over to the extractor. Does yours pick up a round and lock it into the bolt face like a Mauser, or does it feed into the chamber like a Remington?

the early M77 Mark II rifles were not controlled feed. The lip on the bottom of the bolt face prevents the case from sliding up behind the extractor while the round is stripped from the magazine. The extractor is pushed over the case head to engage the rim after the round is chambered...a "push feed" system.

A few years after the introduction of the Mark II this design fault was corrected making the later Mark II's a true controlled feed rifle.
This lip can be removed making an early Mark II into a controlled feed rifle.

Note: original M77 rifles with the tang safety cannot be modified as such because the plunger ejector in the bolt face precludes them from becoming a controlled feed rifle.

PS: the original tang safety Ruger M77 rifle was never ever referred to as the Mark I...the Mark I is a 22 pistol...I wish people could get this straight...

Thanks for the info Rembo. I will talk with the local gunsmith and see if he wants to modify the bolt for me. If he does not, I have a friend of the family that is an amazing machinist who would do it just to say that he did :). I will load up a few dummy rounds to check the feeding and I will be off to the races.
