I was thinking back when I was a kid when our neighbor let me shoot his little Savage model 20 in 250-3000 and I remember lusting after that gun for a long time. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic todav so does anyone here have one and would like to share some experiences and pictures?

I think I've owned about 3 or 4 of them over the years, still have one that I just can't seem to let go of but it's a 98% rifle and you don't find model 1920's with that kind of condition.

Been thinking about digging up another one for a shooter and scoping it if one comes across and I trip over it.

Here's a pic of the one that doesn't leave the safe. It's in 300 Savage, actually every gun in this pic is in 300 Savage.

I have a M20 in 250-3000, acquired at the Chilliwack gun show last March. It is a clone of the same model rifle belonging to a friend of mine. His father purchased the one he has in the 1920's, and it was passed down several years ago. I have always admired that rifle so when the opportunity presented itself I couldn't resist. The serial numbers are close and neither has been modified in any way since new. They have beautiful lines and are a pleasure to carry, it's a keeper.

My .250 was fitted with a well done custom stock many years ago. The last owner had bought it while stationed at Pond Inlet with the RCMP in 1951. It has a Noske scope installed on a side mount. The windage adjustment is in the rear mount.

I haven't seen one for sale in a long time , I don't think they were ever very common but they have a certain appeal and has a place on my wish list.

A very well used model 20.

Do you have more pics of your beautiful Model 20? I'd love to see some close ups and details of the action. I remember looking at one years ago and thinking it was a neat rifle but haven't seen one in person for some time now.

I Picked up one awhile ago here on CGN that was D&T'd with a rough throat just to see how it works?
If anyone needs an project just PM me here .
I have the model 40 also in 250 Sav wich I like a little more, but not as ###y or petite as the 1920!
It's really nice, almost put a scope on it ,but couldn't do it:)
Great thread for a gun that most don't know anything about?
Cheers Dale Z!

The Model 1920 descended from a prototype .30-06 service rifle that Savage developed during WWI. Configured like a M1903 Springfield. The US Gov't didn't buy it, but the action evolved into the shortened version used in the M1920. There was also an experimental prototype configured like the SMLE.
These rifles pioneered the cylindrical receiver with recoil lug sandwiched between the receiver and the barrel.
There is a detailed description of the action in Stuart Otteson's book on bolt actions.

It has a Noske scope installed on a side mount. The windage adjustment is in the rear mount.

The first Newton I purchased had (has) a Noske sidemount installed. They are beautifully made

I tend to have a soft spot for rifles and cartridges ahead of their time. The Model 20 did in the beginning of the last century what Kimber is doing today. Amazing really.
I would love to take a shooter Model 20 and use it.
80gr TTSXs at 3050fps would do just fine.

It is an old mounting system, but certainly workable. Post reticle in the scope.

Tiriaq - the Newton rifle mount is a slide on Noske side mount - but the scope is a Hensoldt Wetzlar Ziel Dialyt 2 3/4x with a German #1 reticle. It is uncoated and, according to a Lithuanian acquaintance who claimed to have seen an old Finnish rifle with one, they were supposed to have been apochromatically corrected. This one is certainly sharp and renders very nice, high contrast images as long as the sun is kept out of the FOV ... they are not light weigh as they are steel tubed with brass retaining rings etc .. and the Noske rings & mount was machined from one block of steel. Wonder what that setup would cost to duplicate today :)

The model 20 came in .300 savage and 250.Maybe others? The original mt rifle. The 250 had a 1-14" twist..............Harold

Rather than digging out the one I have left heres a pic of one of the ones I sold. I think I kept the peep sight off this one, it's a factory Lyman #54 made for the model 1920.
