So, a few years back I carried a buddies Savage 284 is field one Fall weekend. I end up taking a real nice buck with it one cold, frosty morning. Lad was making his way down a ridge line, checkin his scrapes a long the way. The poor lad never knew what hit him, he dropped like a sack of...
All that to say, I was quite impressed with the cartridge, and have always thought about picking up one myself. I would like like to find something does this Fall. Would like to find one of the old Browning’s Safaris with the Sako action, but they are a hard find. I read Ruger made some in the 70s, have not seen one yet. Wondering on peoples experiences with then cartridge, and any suggestions on a rifle. Looking for something light. Preferably a bolt action rifle, not a huge 99 fan, but you never know?

The 284 Winchester is a terrific round. I personally have a Win Mod 88 and a Mod 100 Carbine in the cartridge that are wonderful hunters and treasured family heirlooms.

Since the cartridge has somewhat faded into obscurity over the years, and only one ammo maker loading factory every once in awhile, finding both a factory built rifle off the shelf, as well as factory ammo is going to be near impossible.

You're best bet would probably be finding a donor action and getting a custom chambered barrel on it and investing in some reloading equipment.

I've owned a few 284's over the years. Only one I still own is one I built on a Rem 600 action. Synthetic LW stock. Extended mag box and opened up the action a little for a longer col, and throated for 160 gr bullets. Leupold 2-7 on it. Was my goat gun for years. Great cartridge, will do everything the 280 will do. - dan

I built one this winter on a short action model 70. I've only shot lighter bullets through it at the range. Shoots good!
Best bet is to find a rifle you like and rebarrel it to a 284 win as there aren't very many factory offerings as you know.

I have had two, still have one. Both are great shooters, the one I no longer have was a custom heavy barrel target rifle and it was a real nice shooter. The one I have still is another custom on a Rem 700, Broughton barrel, and a Bell and Carlson stock, it works great too, I gave it to my son and he plays a bit with it but has never killed any game with yet. It is easy to load for, Winchester still makes brass for it, and Lapua has 6.5-284 that is easily necked up, tons of bullet selection too from 120 grain to 195 so it is very versatile. Good luck in your search!

Yes, the ammo is hard to come by, but I do see it from time to time at the shows, I should started picking them all up, should a fund what I’m looking for. I’m not set up fir reloading at this time, and with a 5 and 1 year old, it may be awhile before I could get into it. Right now, it is even difficult to get out for a hunt. If I could find the right rifle, and even a couple boxes of ammo, I’d be good for a while. I do have a line on a Browning Micro Medallion. Very nice, light rifle, but maybe I a more old school as I prefer something that still has irons on it, this has not factory sights, just made for a scope. I do know of a couple of the Browning Safaris, but they are hard to pry from their owners hands. I have never done a build before, not sure where to start with that. I am nostalgic for vintage sporting rifles, so may try to wait it out until the right gun comes a long. Though, should I go down the build road, sounds like there are several on here how I could go to for som advice.

I have a Ruger M77 .284 and a Ruger No.1-V in 6.5-.284... I love the .284 case... it is a really well designed cartridge, covers a lot of bases... what I really want to find is an M77 MKII .284, that would be a never sell... but I have been looking casually for years without luck.

280Rem, 7mm Rem, (270Win cough cough) are few other options with more available factory ammo with similar performance.
If you don't reload the 284Win is not going to be friendly.

Buckmastr if ever selling that Model 70 custom, look me up. ;)

Gotcha.
The second time I had it at the gun club a guy wanted to buy it as well. The stock is definitely an eye catcher and the groups it shoots aren’t ugly either.
I think todbartel ordered the McMillan when the rifle was still a 243 win. Which shot good when it ended up in my possession prior to the 284 win dream.:dancingbanana:

I like the Urban Spectre finish, not a first, but it grew on me. I ordered the stock for a guy but he gave me the wrong measurements for his action and it didn't fit his rifle. So I was stuck with it. Bought a Model 70 243, had the blind magazine milled out for the floorplate and glass bedded by Rocky Mtn Rifles. That 243 shot pretty nice! I like it better as the 284 now

I hadn't shot the 284 in a few weeks and so grabbed it heading out the door tonight. Inspired by this thread.
3 rounds of 120 TTSX at 3280 fps to 548 yrds off bags went pretty good. Good enough for a couple of pics!:dancingbanana:

I'd like to build one on Remington long action next. But my latest .284 cal barrel was seized by US customs!?!

Wow! Nice grouping! Hope this border issue works out for you. Any idea why it was seized? Do you need export permits for barrels?

Thanks.
No idea what's going on inside US customs. A dozen or so barrels sailed through no issues in the last few years but something changed, or someone changed...
