Anyone shooting a Weatherby 307 yet?

when the time comes for me to buy another rifle it will be the Weatherby Vanguard meat-eater edition.

Having done my only western hunt years ago (pronghorn and mule deer in Wyoming) with a rifle in 257 Wetherby, why does this new rifle need a muzzle break ? Actual performance increased or simply the fashion of the day. Same with these adjustable stocks, yes I’m a Fudd.

Muzzle Brake = less felt recoil at the expense of noise, but better/faster follow up shot (if required) due to less recoil.

Adj Stock - can’t say personally, as I’ve never touted one in the field. I’ll hazard a guess and say a personalized position/cheek weld etc for more consistency with the rifle in shooting position. How well that works out in the heat of the moment I’ll let others chime in there…

Fashion of the day due to many asking the marketing departments to send this up the chain to te bean counter for approval.
Flavour of the day is my guess.

For what I paid for my used 300Wby, I’ve been impressed so far.

Pro’s - Decent weight (8.3 by my scale), MOA accuracy with Hornady 200gr ELXs surprisingly (given 300Wbys dont like BT style bullets). Accuracy will tighten up once I start messing with hand loads this off season though. Low recoil due to the ST Brake installed.

Con’s - Factory Ammo cost, concussive blast from Brake. Will be on the expensive side on the brass, powder charge while reloading for it. Barrel length at 26” plus Brake..

Anything I’d change - Just my current optics setup from the Bushy Elite 4200 3.5-10x40 to a Leupold VX IIIi 2.5-10x40 or similar. That Bushys eyebox can get a little too close for comfort if I’m not in the right cheek position.

I’d risk another VG2. Probably in a 6.5PRC

Personally...and not many folks are gonna understand this, there are no 700 clones that I'm aware of, there are 700 footprint actions, like this WBY, dozens of custom actions, but the reason they do it is simple, all the aftermarket support.
What they all do equally well is ruin the best thing about a 700 action, the gas sealing.
Honestly, they all #### it up by changing extractor to Sako/M16/Savage, whatever, anything other then the internal riveted extractor ####s the whole reason 700's were awesome guns.
Christ the whole receiver/bolt/recoil lug design was for efficiency and cheapness in manufacturing, while still maintaining an action safer then a Mauser 98, 700 was never some premium voodoo magic action, it was built to be cheap and safe as ####.
So still...just personally, I stick to Rem 700 actions.

Do you happen to know if that rifle came with the long throat weatherbys are historically known for? Perhaps it shoots BT bullets decently because it is not long-throated like the rifles of old?

It’s a VG2, so not a 100% sure on the long throat or not. I know the orig owner tried GS’s, Interlocks and ELDX’s and did say it preferred the flat base stuff over the ELDXs but they did group decently according to them. I had been thinking ABLRs or TSXs as It was mentioned in a thread way back they were also decent choices for the 300 Wby.

This, more than anything else. Brakes, cans, and chassis are pretty much de rigueur these days thanks the PRS/NRL and such.
