Anyone Using a 28 Gauge in the Field This Season

One thing I have not understood yet is why no one makes a 28 gauge rifled shotgun for use with sabot's. It would be a lot more manageable than even a 20-gauge. Given that the 28 is only .55 inch, it should be fairly easy to design a Powerbelt type projectile, or a sabot to shoot 40 caliber sized bullets. I use a 20 ga. Savage because it's not as bulky as the 12, but I know I'd switch to a 28, or even a .410 (if someone made one with reasonable power and projectiles).

Agree but the 28-gauge would likely be in production now if more states allowed bores that small for deer hunting Many have 20ga as a min unfortunately

Wait till catnthehat read this and he will chime in.
He has posted pictures of shooting pheasants and ducks and geese too with his arsenal of 28 gauges.
Tight Groups,

Actually, this year the black powder hammer doubles got the most use!
I did use a 28 this fall for a day, and the 28 is the only gun my son uses except for this antique muzzle loader, which he uses once during our annual bird hunt:>)

This rooster came up on a classic skeet station 8 shot - he lost his head in the process !

I stand corrected..Well Done Sir, great shooting for sure.
That bird sure lost his head over your choice of scatter gun ;)

Sure were some laffs from the guys with me, I giggling pretty good as well!
Shot five birds that day with the 28 that day, IIRC.
But the 12 bore hammer double is just too nice to put down, once you have dropped a couple of 2 3/4 dram brass cases down the pipes you will know what I mean!
However, the 28 still gets used, for sure- if I had more time to hunt I'd shot more gunsHAHA!!

I'd like to try a 28 gauge this coming fall. Shells aren't hard to find, but I can't seem to find a shotgun in any action.
Anyone know where I can find one, new or used?

What is your budget? I know of a couple of O/U guns for sale, as well as a couple of later production model 12s.

Most definitely will be using a couple 28 gauge shotguns... I do about 45% of my wing shooting with 28's, 45% with 20's and 10% with 12's... the 12's usually only come out for a couple late season hunts... or when gunning for training & trials.

Over the past 10 years, I have used a 20 during September weeks only and then switched to 28ga for the rest of the season. I don't recall having used a 12 for hunting during that period.

I have never shot a 28 gauge. Is the difference from a 20g to 28g similar to the difference between a 12g and a 20g? This is perhaps a hard or impossible question to answer, but I thought I would throw it out there.

I know a guy that's going to Argentina next week with 2 O/Us to shoot doves, he plans to shoot 8000 rounds whiles he's there.
I'll try and get the brand/model.
Possibly the best wingshooter I know and 28 has become his choice for pretty much any bird shooting.
he's hot as he!! on the sporting clays and skeet course with 28 as well

To my surprize, after doing a little digging, I see that the 28 gauge isn't as hard to find as I thought.
Even found a couple on E.E., thanks Ahsan Ahmed. And Epps has a few new and used.

Yep, taking out the old Savage 220 this fall again. Used to have a 20ga and a .410 double. Sold them both the year I got this nice old single 28.
