I know this is covered before, daypacks and fanny packs and what's in them. I see guys with half the contents of a gun store hanging on their belt looks very cumbersome and uncomfortable. I've tried a dozen-ish different day packs and fanny packs. Every time I need some little item it always seems to be in the backpack and I have to take it off to get it. Fanny packs never seem to fit under or over long jackets in cold weather. I loaded up an old fly fishing vest I use for hiking a bit, with a bottle of water some food first aid kit rain gear and all the other stuff I throw in it comes to about 6 lb. So I'm look at buying one or making one. Anyone have experience?

We have to wear blaze orange here for big game hunting season in Ontario. Most of the hunters I know use a backpack to carry our stuff.

Surplus usmc molle vest, add pouches or shell/mag carriers as need be. I mainly use it while rabbit or grouse hunting. When large game hunting I wear a molle belt with some pouches and a first aid kit and have a day pack on or a large pack strapped to the quad.

I've been thinking about a blaze-orange molle-vest... that is, if/when my upland vest eventually die

The stuff I usually log around
- Ammo for whatever gun I'm using (No, not a battle-load...)
- Compass and whistle
- Emergency blanket, a tea candle and some match
- Something to drink
- Something to munch on
- A few first aid items and a pack of dental floss
- Room for some games and/or remove some layers of clothes

I was thinkering with the idea of an “upland” vest but more for all around hunting, I
Like the back pouch for small games and or a spare jacket, a water bottle etc and the few front pockets for smaller items!! Need to make it a way that all pocket are accessible w/o taking it off!!

when I am coyote hunting I sometimes use one of the old USMC fighting vests, light ..open back so not hot and in warmer weather can wear a camelback without added bulk.. a few pouches for ammo.. drop bag for binos and clips to hold the call remotes

I love the molle system, don't hunt, but use molle for shooting and gopher hunting, very open design but you back gets a tad sweaty if you add pouches/bags, the side is very.

I pull off the mag pouches depending on what I am shooting that day, that opens up ventilation, tried other vests like this mounting system best.

Would wear an orange light vest over this for sure if out hunting.

I had bad experiences in the army with vests, but I like web belts and gear. My standard kit is a 64 Pattern belt and canteen carrier, an old American buttback, a knife sheath and a saw sheath.

I have a lightweight molle vest that I have used for some hunting.

I like it in a field blind for birds. One large, open pocket for shells on my loading side. Calls with belt hooks fit nicely on the opposite side over my shoulder. A big pocket for snacks.

Rigged a bit different for hunting big game from a blind but keeps everything close at hand without having to move or dig through a pack.

If I am walking, I still prefer my daypack but I mount my range finder on my left shoulder.

Not a tac vest but I use my turkey vest for just about every game I chase. Lots of pockets and storage and a seat for whenever needed. I shudder to think of some of the stuff I can drag around in it. Throw an orange vest over top if needed.

I like the seat cushion on them turkey vests. Good for a old guy to stop and maybe have a nap.

Check out some of the micro chest rigs that are on the market. Something like a Spiritus Systems Microfight or a Haley Strategic DC3RM rig. They are both light and compact in size, can be customized relatively easy, both are really well made.

I have both and am more partial to Haley Strategic, it just like its layout and hardware a bit better. I'll be using mine this upcoming hunting season to keep my gear better organized.

I've been thinking of making my own but for now I use an old Brit combat jacket that has big enough pockets for most of my crap and a small backpack.

I may just sew on a few more pockets to the combat jacket and add a game pocket across the back and be done with it.
