I just want to pick up a little beater to keep for camping and what not. I'm interested in the defender short barreled model. Have you ever experianced binding of the slide or jamming? I thought about picking up another 870 but holy crap did they get expensive!

I am interested in something for the same purpose as pharoh2 mentioned.

I had been looking at some of the Norinco offerings but the workmanship seems to be hit and miss. Barrels from an 870 are not a guarantee to fit and I would like a shorty for camping but the option to have a longer barrel for bird hunting as well.

Does the Maverick have ability to swap with model 500 barrels/folding stocks or is it a totally different design???

I was looking at the Maverick 88. Well it was a nice and pretty light gun, I'm not get one. Besides being a left hander when checking on length my trigger finger couldn't even reach the trigger. Also felt uncomfortable when pointing at wall/roof. Action worked nice when paying with it. Just not a gun for me as the cost of replacing the stock I might as well as pay in to a gun that fits me from the factory.

Surfclod the Maverick can have the 500 parts used as replacement peices according to everything I've seen and read about them as I was looking for a cheap gun that can shoot 3" steel shells.

Maverick owners will be along shortly.

I have a mossber 500a persuader 18.5" barrel. No problems so far, only put about 700 rounds through her so far. Good cheap shotgun. As for the maverick, its made by mossberg and i know some accesories will work on both. Just google what you want and it should say all the models its compatible with.

Get a 500 not the mav. I got a mav, but I cant get any toys for it. You can get as much as tou want for a 500. If you want a mav. I will part with mine.

Umm, for 200 bucks brand new what do you expect? The projectiles fling in a forward direction. Enough said. Had one, shot it, it sucked, sold it. $150 bucks. Good riddance.

I've got one it takes mossburg 500 parts well enough I put a telescoping stock on it and a rifled barrel, I haven't put alot of rounds through it but the ones I have its worked great for, the only thing is its real light and 3" slugs kick hard.

I've had one for over a year. I use it all the time, I've also never had a problem, and it's gone without a cleaning since I bought it.

The action is a little rough, and not nearly as smooth as my winchester 1300, but much better than my norinco trench gun.

For a beater, and thats exactly why I bought it, you can't go wrong.

I personally could not see a difference between the maverick and the mossberg other than cosmetics.

I have had extraction problems with heavy loads im my Mossberg 500A.

TBS I think I got a lemon as the vast majority of 500 owners don't have the same problem.

With their aluminum recievers they are a great shotgun for carrying but the felt recoil is greater than say a similar sized 870.

Mav88 are a good gun for its purpose. Had mine for many years and it "brings down the birds" as good as my Brn A5....

I've got a Maverick88 that I use as a bush gun. I find it to be very reliable, I've never had a stoppage with it. The Maverick88 is a no frills Mossy 500. It has a different name on it but regardless of what anyone tells you it is a 500 that Mossberg calls a maverick to fill the "I have no money" market niche.

My only complaint it the el-cheapo forestock, it's lame, but I'm never afraid of it breaking on me.

Please elaborate as to how it "sucked". It functions, it isn't dressed up and won't accept all accessories like the 500/590 series. Like you said, its $200 and it beats the a$$ off any Norinco product and runs like its bigger brothers. I fail to see where the down fall is.

On a side note, the stocks on most shotguns are too long. Hacksaw and a file will fix that problem.

had one for about three years or so for just the same purpose as you want it for. Works well, has never had it bind and have been quie happy with it. I put a Mossy 500 barrel on it with rifle sights and am very happy with it. The only beef I have is that with a Knoxx NRS stock I cannot get my head down far enough to hit clays/magpies/etc without getting pasted in the cheek. Fit issue due to my lanky physique, YMMV

I have a Maverick 88 and I got the pistol Grip, Moss 500 Heat shiel. Moss 500 Weaver rail. Moss 500 swivel set. ect it all fits...

One of the coolest part that dosent fit it the moss 500 forehand grip... witch pissed me off... lol ... and Combathunting.com made sure to put it in red letters... lol..

So I will modify it with a sort of weaver mount and Grip...

and the mossy 500 barrels fit...

It dosent kick that bad I can fire 3 inch one handed .... lol..
