Anyone with opinions on the Mossberg Mavrick shotguns?

I got a Maverick 88 for my son. Definitely not as well built as a Rem but he hasn't had problems with it yet, mind ya he's only shot 2 3/4 so far. I'll be putting up my Rem 870 Express on the EE shortly in the $150 range.

Mav 88 with the two barrel option is good deal. Have been using two for years and they work very well as a no frills shotgun. One barrel is 24 inch rifle sight and the other is 28 or 30 inch bead sight........

I love my 88 Kit, with the 18.5" smoothbore and the 28" w/modified chock with fiber optic front sight.

ONLY diff, is aluminum receiver and the safty is a push button instead of the receiver mounted slide one on a 500. ALL parts are interchangable, except the grip...unless you change the guide rails as well, then your good to go :)

Unless your hardcore, just save your $$ get an 88, and enjoy the range, save the extra $$ to make it tacticool for ZOMBIE defense use or just buy the extra $200 dollars woth of AMMO! :D:D

I got a Maverick as a knockabout/camper. I am amazed at how good it is at skeet with the 18.5 cylinder!
It has functioned perfectly so far, and now that LFGA has a slug range, I will be trying a few 1 oz winchester slugs through it.
The big rubber but pad was too much, took it off and replaced it with a slip on rubber "boot" I had lying around. Fits great now.
For a serious duck gun, I"d rather buy an 870 than a spare barrel for my Mav, but I love it for an all rounder/camper.

yeah, my maverick is pretty good at smacking clay pigeons with the 18.5" barrel. that's a good idea with the butt pad. i'll have to try that. mine is a touch long itself.

Personally I think there is a world of difference between the Maverick and the Mossberg. This is my Mossberg truck gun it's an old 400G model (pretty much a 500) that I picked up for $150.00 at a gun show. It's way better than an 88.

Got a win 2200, it was my grandfathers and i expect it dates back to maybe late sixties early seventies, essentially the same action as the defender. He used it on the salt water for ducks/turrs and in the woods. It only has a 2 3/4 chamber and no vent rib. My dad has it since the registry, I've shot 2 moose and 1 caribou with her as well as hundreds of other critters (rabbits, ducks, geese, grouse, patridge and tree rats) as well as hundreds of clays. It isn't fussy about cleanliness ar rust and has never not went boom when the trigger was pulled. I don't think you can go wrong with a winnie and a used one is cheap too.

What can't you add to an 88 that you can't a 500?

The fore-grips for the 500 will not fit the 88. You are basically stuck with the fore-grip that comes with the 88 unless you start swapping out 88 parts for 500 parts such as the action arms and fore-grip tube and nut.

Everything else made for the 500 should fit your 88. Oh and the safeties are in different places.

Here is the start for my Mav88 more to come in this week... Heat shield, Tactical light and 50 round sling.

Looking for a mossberg 500 grip assembly so I can swap out the grips.

Back when I was young and didn't have a pot to piss in, I bought a Maverick shotgun For about $175, brand new.

I used it on too many fishing/hiking/backcountry/canoe trips to list, I shot the hell out of it every chance I got, too. At least 15 years and thousands of rounds and thousands of Km's later, I did break the single operating arm...I think they have 2 now.:)

I had one go ka-boom on me. Broke the action bar. Tore the hell out of the interior of the shotgun's receiver, with deep, deep gouges in the aluminum. I wouldn't touch another, not even if they were free and I was paid to use it!
