You can have a firearm to defend your livestock from predators (four legged only), and in wilderness areas for animal defense. In either case you can have ammo handy but not stored with the firearm.

i beleive you are allowed to have a firearm handy for predetor control. definition of "preditor" theres the 4 and 2 legged kind!!!!!!!!!!!!! you could use a 10,000 volt
oil furnace ignition transformer hooked up to your door
knobs and steel widow bars. turn it on when u leave and go to bed.

After reading this thread a few thing jump out at me first ting you should decide is. If you feel justified could you kill another human. If you can't say 100 pecent yes don't use any type of wepon. If the answer is yes than only shoot to kill. Less than lethal may be lethal for you. Second don't ever talk to the police without a lawer anything you say WILL be held against you. You could be totally justified but one misinterpited sentince might be all that stands between you and you freedom. Just a few thoughts.

You are wrong here, it doesn't say that anywhere, however, the only "legal purpose" for owning a handgun in Canada is for "Target Practice" for the majority of us. There are circumstances where CFC allows handgun ownership for "Protection of Life" i.e. ATC for Wilderness or Remote work areas.
Shotguns can be loaded really fast, if you keep ammunition on the gun either a sock or side saddle, AND practice, it works well. Shotgun whilst loading and racking the slide trump a handgun in the intimidation factor. The M4 may be one of the top CQB options but not for home defense because of the potential of collateral damage. He wasn't asking about CQB, but home defense in an apartment. Also, there are many who will say that the M4 isn't the best urban CQB option.
Not sure what exactly is the point being made here.....ANY caliber will take someone out, it's about shot placement, not how many layers of dry wall it will penetrate...

There simply isn't enough time to tear under the bed, unlock the trigger lock, load the gun and start shooting if someone busts in the door when you live in a one room apartment. Hence.. axe propped up against the bed frame.
I always laughed when my wife would check to make sure the axe was still where it was suppose to be before we'd go to bed after watching a zombie movie.
