APRA Informal F Class Range Day

Inspector/Jay/Dale
thanks that was a lot of fun and very interesting i look forward to matches in the future if scheduling permits.....
ok, now the APRA website works again so how do i find "F" class matches? are they the full bore matches with a whole bunch of different distances?

That be them... FClass and T/R (Target Rifle) shoot side by side. APRA Fullbore range.

If you are looking for an FClass matches, do not forget the Driller's match Aug 25&26 at Nokomis SK

thanks i knew the two groups shot side by side thanks to the tutorial but didn't realize the distances shot were at distances other than 300/600/900...
now i know...

That was an excellent day out thanx so much guys for putting it on and inviting us out, and to think I almost bailed. I learned a lot and now have a second reason to put a new scope on the .223. I would just like to say to my fellow CGNers if this opportunity comes up again go and give it a try you'll really be glad you did. Again many thanx hope to get in on a match real soon. Iain.

Wow, what a day! I had a blast, it's not that hard getting on target at 800m, but Jay & Glen showed us how it's done - consistently in the V-bull at 600 & 800. I think I got a couple of V's but reading the wind is a challenge.

Got a lot more respect for the T/R shooters too - Dale, Peter & others all nailing that target off their elbows with iron sights.

Working in the butts is kind of fun too, those bullets make quite a loud crack going by five feet over your head.

I hope I can arrange time to attend a for-real match later this summer. Thanks again Glen, Jay, Dale, Frank, Peter & everybody else who helped out.

Eric

apra informal range day

i had a blast.
BTW i was the old fart with the #1mk3 enfield. i was quite pleased with the 300 yard shooting but me old eyes failed a tad at 600 yards. (it was the wind i'm sure ;)
my regret is i didn't stick with beezley at 800 yards but switched to a scoped rifle. it would be nice to have an 800 yard setting for the 303 but i'm not sure why!:D
there was lots of help from some excellent shooters. what impressed me the most was the target rifle shooters. target sights at 800 yards ... very impressive. all the shooters , including the newbies, did well.
i'm hoping inspector will have another informal day when the match season ends. i'll put the irons on the 308 ... or maybe just work with beezley the bisley some more.
thanks again to all who took the time.

Special thanks to Glen and Jay for putting up with us and showing us the ropes.
Hope that the participants will return - because that is the whole idea.
I certainly feel less intimidated by 800m after today...
See you at the next match

Thanks to all the participants. I hope it was enlightening and cleared up some of the unknowns regarding Fullbore and F Class shooting. I asked the question; was it as difficult as you expected or thought it might be? The unanimous answer was; no, I was surprised I did as well as I did the first time at that distance. This statement alone made the excercise a success in my eyes.

We now have 7 potential regular shooters, all with grins on their faces. Further, I take comfort in knowing these 7 individuals can now attend any Fullbore match without fear of the unknown and do well in the bargain. I also think spending time in the butts marking targets helps a bit too. I myself was quite pleased to see the number of V Bulls with just about any make and model of rifle/scope you can think of. And, out to 800m with 223's. Terrific!

I thought with the way things went, a 1 Day event seems to be able to accomplish what we intended. All the while trying not to get to technical yet getting the point across and have a laugh or two.

Again I'd like to thank Jay, Dale and the TR fellows who so kindly shared the the day, and the Range, for an oustanding first event.

I'd like to also ask for any feedback per what we did. What would you change? What would you like to see more of? I mean besides shooting, we all want more of that. We'll see what the future holds. If we have the time, interest and the wherewithall, we might do another later this year.

Cheers, Glen
PS: Steve, Blue Ice is a terrific treatment for your shoulder. I bet you wished you'd left the 223 barrel on the Blaser, eh. 5 shots with a 300 Ouch & Ouch mag is one thing. 50+ prone is a whole 'nother.

Hey Inspector,

Sorry I was unable to make it however I was called out of town for a family issue. I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you do schedule another clinic as I would absolutely love to come out and try shooting.

Just back from a so so performance in Chilliwack and Eagle Ridge in Oregon. I'll have to look at what's happening in the next few weeks and talk to the others involved and see what happens. You must realize that the first one was put together with relatively short notice and I'll assume the next event will likely be the same. So many matches, so little time.

Cheers, Glen

Just found out the APRA Ottawa Alternative match at Homestead is a go for 18-19 Aug '07. Due to most of the TR types missing at the CFRC, this might be an ideal time to come out to either your first match after the clinic or get involved and pick it up on the run. If things go as they recently have, the format will be; a 2 range short for the morning and a 2 range long for the afternoon both days and daily agg awards. If you shoot both days there's a two day agg. 60 shots plus sighters per day. With normally a limited number of attendees at this one there should be lots of time for instruction along the way.

I told you it would be short notice.

I'm sorry, but the bridge construction currently scheduled has been put off as the bridge they intended on recycling to the creek location was found to be to short. DoH! Who held the dumb end?

Cheers, Glen

can we join all the apprpriate clubs/groups at the event? what will be the total cost?
will scoring cards/sheets etc be provided?
what time will it start?
sorry but the APRA website is not easy to navigate...

Don't think I'll be able to compete, just traded the Remington in on a Tikka, I posted the reasons why in another thread. I need to work on some loads unless I can get the 69GMM factory stuff to work. Was getting some serious flyers last night, but then the barrel is brand new and the action bolts weren't all that tight.

Plus, the flat rail means I only have about 22MOA of up to dial into it.

Eric

The normal Match fee's are 30 a day with paid markers or 25 a day with competitor marking and all the score cards etc, are provided. As I'm not sure what's going on at the moment, other than the match is on, it might just be run on a concensus basis. The annual APRA Memberships is 100 bucks and with only a few matches left it seems a bit late to spring for it. They run from Jan 1 to Dec 31 but I'm sure we'll find a way to accomodate everyone anyway.

Eric, I don't think it really matters what you have if it goes bang it will work. 22 MOA should be enough. If not, we use Kentucky windage and Alabama elevation all the time. If you hold off on top of the backer that's good for another 4 MOA

Cheers, Glen

Just want to say props to Jay and Glen for their efforts - organizing and patience with the newbies.
Today's match was a blast.
Course of fire: 15 shots + 2 sighters from 800m and 900m.
For those who could not make it - it was a great day at the range.
Distance is not the issue - reading the wind is!!

Colin, for your statement regarding elevation vs windage, TA DAAA! I think Jay and I better stop giving advice. Puts me in mind of "Grasshopper, when you can grab the pebble......" Glad you had a good time.
See you at the APRA Palma
Cheers, Glen

things that might discourage new F class shooters

-claiming a match will be held on both days of a weekend and then not having a sunday match
-not posting a start time so showing up at 7:20 for maybe an 8 start to get through all the registration/briefing etc becomes a wait until 9:30 when some other newbie shows up and says "i thought there was a shoot today"...

-one more chance, all respect to Glen and Jay, but people wonder why full bore/f class/whatever is not well attended.....

Sorry Jay. What actually happened was we really didn't know who was coming or what was going to go on until we got there. All the TR shooters are in Ottawa, so with only 6 shooters including Jay and myself there, we as a group decided to shoot 8 and 900m and pull our own targets. The match fee was waived allowing the only cost to be the customary 5 bucks for pasters etc. After this it was felt the second day wouldn't be any better and with the threat of rain for Sunday, decided to call it a done deal.

I'm still a bit goofy from all the driving, shooting and working over the past 2 weeks and should have been a bit more vocal regarding what would happen. I'll remedy that situation and endeavor to eliminate further occurrences. I still think the problem revolves around being able to give sufficient notice and currently, most things we've done have been on really short notice and for that I appologize. I'll talk to Jay Winfield and see if we can get the Friday before the Alberta Palma match which is shot at 800, 900 and 900m on 8-9 September, to get the newer shooters a chance to get familiarized if they want to (even just the afternoon may be an option).

I will post the coming events for those who may not have the Schedule.

Cheers, Glen
