AR-15 Magazine Seating Issues

Hey CGN,

I have a problem with magazines not seating, or not 'locking' in to my DDM4 V5 and also into my RRA LAR-15 but never with my Norinco. When I have a more than several rounds in any mag, USGI, PMAG, or LAR-15 the magazine will not lock in. I have to smack the bottom (give it the love tap). The severity of the issue seams to increase with the amount of rounds I have and also is a bigger issue with the LAR mag , than the PMAG than the USGI (USGI being the least problematic).

From this I'm beginning to think that the spring compression is resisting the seating. I have been told to try and shave a thin slice off the follower to prevent this issue. However, I feel that will not make a huge difference since, I've tried 8 or 9 rounds in the LAR and the problem still persists, although to a lower degree, and still exists with PMAGS and thats 5/30 which are under a lot less spring compression.

A fellow shooter at a Tac Match suggested I should get a gun smith to grind down the bolt inside my DD to help alleviate the problem. This would be undesirable.

So my questions are:

Is the seating issue common for AR-15?
How much force do you guys put? Does your mag require the love tap (my norinco never did)?
What's the best solution?

Thank you.

That's strange if you are under filling the mag.

It's common on a closed bolt with a 30rd loaded to 30, or a 5/30 loaded to 5.

Pinning is usually done to 5.5, giving you the little extra bit of room to accommodate for loading on the closed BCG.

Try a different bolt, and those mags on a different rifle. That should give you an idea where the issue is.

How many mags have you tried? One of each of the types mentioned or a bunch?

4 LAR-15, 2 PMAGS, 3 USGI

The problem happens with my RRA LAR-15 rifle aswell, but not the norc

I think the issue is a combination of the the rifle and mag; I will try switching bolt carriers though.

I tried 4/5 with a PMAG and it works fine, but with 5/5 its a problem, so yes I think filing the follower down will help. However with the LAR mags, the problem still exists with 8/10 rounds, so I think that spring just has too much compressive force?
